re: if I click on a category and then go back to “View All” it displays only the names.
The “View All” link is working as it should… it should be list of all the entries in the directory. If you do not wish to use that link, you can turn it off in the settings. This can disabled on the Connections : Settings admin page under the Display tab in the Result List Actions section.
re: Is it possible to have it always display the entries as they appear in the screen shot?
Yes, that is the default view of the directory. You will only ever see the names as a list on the View All page which as explained, the link can be turned off.
Hope that helps!
ps. The initial error you experienced I was able to find and fix with the aid of another user who experienced it too. I hope to release updates to both Connections and the Enhanced Categories extension which fixes the issue. When you see the updates in the admin, you’ll be able to safely update.

re: Why is automatic update not available for the new version (2.4) of the Widgets extension?
You need to activate the support license key in order to receive the in admin updates.
Here’s the FAQ on how to activate your support license key on your site.

You are using the Default template? You will need one that support pagination such as cMap. If you are trying to output hundreds, thousands of entries on a single page you are running the server out of resources, causing the long load time without the page being completed loaded. This is not a bug or limitation in Connections … if you were to try to list hundreds or thousands of entries of WordPress posts and a single page you would run into the exact same issue.

I suggest cMap to resolve this issue with too much page content.

re: How many entries can it handle?
Since cMap paginates the results 20 per page … in theory, no limit. I’ve seen users use it on directories with 10’s of thousands of entries.
