ParticipantSteven –
We have a law firm directory set up using Slim Plus. However, the firm wants the directory broken up by hierarchy – Partner, Associate, Of Counsel, etc. We’ve don that so far by using separate short codes for them on one page. You can see that here.
We’d also like to implement the search feature. However, it will return separate results for each shortcode. So, if the person is lower in the hierarchy, there will be a bunch of empty results before them and scrolling may be required.
So, I hoping for a little guidance in resolving the breakup of the display vs the search results either by:
- a different method to visual break up the hierarchy within one shortcode so that search results are simplified
- or, by somehow streamlining the search results
I’m guessing our real issue is the multiple shortcodes. Is there a way to visually separate the directory listing by hierarchy (category) without using multiple shortcodes for each?

What you need to do is create a second page for the search results. Create that page, name it anything you want but take note of the page ID number WordPress assigns it. The page content should be only the
[connections]shortcode, no options and only once. Now on your current page add the home_id shortcode option to each instance of the shortcode.
When searches are made they results should be resolve to your new search results page.
TIP: Since you are using a separate page to display the results, you could use a second template, say the Default Entry Card template so more info is displayed.
Hope that helps!

ParticipantSteven, by default, it seems that for this to work we have to set permalinks site-wide to use page ID instead of postname. “home_id” is looking specifically for an ID and doesn’t seem to work with friendly urls. Is that the case? Can we have the shortcode look for postname instead or are we doing something wrong? It seems odd that the whole site permalink method would have to be changed.

Nope, you do not need to change the permalink structure of the site at all, you can keep as postname.
The only thing that might cause it not to work correctly with a postname permalink is that the site is not yet on domain. Haven’t tested that, but it should work fine.

ParticipantAh. We’ll test on a stray domain I have. Thanks for the info!

ParticipantHmmm…still experiencing the same behavior. The results are reverting back to the directory page instead of the page with ID=329.
Here is an example of the shortcode for Partners:
[connections template='slim-plus' phone_format='%label%: %number%'enter code hereemail_format='%address%' str_work_email='Email' str_work_phone='Phone' str_work_fax='Fax' str_work_addr='' str_note_head='Secretary' str_personal_email='' str_work_addr='' str_home_addr='' enable_bio=FALSE show_addresses=FALSE category='8' enable_category_select=FALSE home_id=329]Is there some way to have home_id look for a page slug? We haven't been able to find where the shortcode's code is located.

re: Hmmm…still experiencing the same behavior.
Apologies, it seems a regression was introduced in 8.4 that prevents this from working like it should. That said, there is a “Plan B”. Instead do this:
Go to the Connections : Settings admin page and change the Directory Home Page to the search results page.
Now, instead of using the home_id shortcode option use the force_home shortcode option set to true like so:
[connections force_home='TRUE']Like before, this will need to be added to each instance of the shortcode on the original page.
I’ll have the home_id shortcode option fixed in the 8.4.1 update scheduled for for release Sunday night.
re: Is there some way to have home_id look for a page slug?
No, that is not needed… the ID is used internally to get the page’s permalink, that permalink should be set as the for action which is not happening because of the regression.
Again apologies!

GuestThanks Steven. We were essentially doing this for our Attorneys listing as a work around already. It seems like it may be part of the same issue and that your update would allow us to do both without the force_home option. We’ll wait for your update. Greatly appreciate your responsiveness to all of the questions.
