Question… when there are WordPress updates, will we have to re-do the hotfix at all or is this a permanent solution?

It is a fix applied to the Gridder template. No other plugin updates would affect it. Neither would updating WordPress. I’ll be releasing a formal Gridder update today which contains that update. So from that perspective, yes, the fix is permanent.
