ParticipantI am still running Version 0.7.2.6 of the connections plugin with the tile plus template. I haven’t upgraded in a long time because there was one upgrade that was pretty painful, (can’t recall the details, I think I had to export and reload the data base to get the update to take place.) so I stopped upgrading…now I am thinking that I should upgrade
Will I be able to just upgrade connections like any other plugin or do I need to something special because I am so many releases / years behind?05/18/2018 at 10:00 am #462977Steven Zahm

I’ve reviewed our email history… there was nothing I could find in regards to a failed update and you having to export and reload the database.
However…
I did find where you asked if there was a way to identify changed entries from a specific date because an individual who was to keep track did not and you need to migrate those changes to another site.
My suggestion was to export the data from the source site to the site needing updated. I wonder if this is what you are remembering??? If that is, that had nothing to do with updating Connections.
Any way, on to your question…
I’ve never tested upgrading from such an old version. Technically it should be fine, but I would proceed with an abundance of caution. I personally would make a backup of the file of the version of Connections you are using. I would also make duplicates of the Connections tables in the database. That way both could be rolled back in case of an issue. Alternatively, you could use a plugin to backup the site and database. That way is something goes wrong, you could just restore the entire site and database. That is more of using a hammer instead of a scalpel approach but would work.
Our email exchanges indicate that you may have edited the files for the template you are using. Depending on those changes, the template may or may not be compatible.
If you want, I could perform the upgrade for you as a service for a fee. Let me know.
Not sure if this helps, but hope it does!

ParticipantDid the update using the normal “update plugin” process after switching the php handler to php5.6 and worked like a charm. Very impressed that such an old version was still upward compatible. Nice Job!

That is awesome to hear! I do put in a lot of effort to make sure I do not break things when I make changes.
Thanks for the feedback!

Just realized I will be pushing an update today that would make a breaking change. Many years ago I started saving dates into their own table. The version you upgraded from did not save dates in this table. For backwards compatibility, I would load the “legacy” date data into the results. The version I’m pushing out today will remove that code. What this means to you is that any anniversaries or birthdays you may have samed in the entry could be lost.
I would recommend that you navigate to the Connections : Tools admin page and click the Export tab. Scroll to the bottom and use the Export All tool. The resulting file can be imported with the CSV Import extension, on importing the exported file the entries will be updated and the dates saved.

ParticipantIts not being used to save dates, just names and addresses of authorized distributors with their contact data and website.
so I don’t need to export the data before updating?07/27/2018 at 2:06 pm #468523Steven Zahm

RE: so I don’t need to export the data before updating?
Nope, since you were not saving anniversary or birthday dates you’re good to go!
