GuestHi Steven,
I’m interested in having a directory that is searchable by State, specialty, and credential.
I’ve created the categories for the specialties and credentials. I’ve created the parent category ‘credential’ and its 4 child categories. Same for Specialty and its children.
Will they appear as 2 dropdowns for people to search by?I haven’t created my listings yet. I’m trying to make sure I setup the categories properly.
Here’s the directory page but there is nothing to look at yet: http://coachapproach4.com/directory-of-credentialed-coaches/
And regards searching by state, is that field automatically included when entries are added or do I need to create state categories?
Thanks! I’ve only downloaded and installed the basic plugin. Haven’t purchased a template yet or any extensions. But I expect to use the Slim PLus temnplate.

What you’ll need is a beta add-on I have for multiple category search as seen on this site, the “Find A Therapist” section. If you purchase either the Extension Pro Pack or the Pro Pack I’ll can send this separately via email with configuration instructions. It is a little difficult to set up, but as a service I do provide installation and configuration as an option. If you are interested in this service I can provide a quote when you I send you this add-on.
I hope this answers your question thoroughly.
ps. This addon is compatible with all the template.

GuestI may have explained myself incorrectly. I want the ability to search by any of those groups, not necessarily at the same time though.
i.e. I want to search for all the coaches in Oregon, another time I want to search for all the coaches that specialize in residential decluttering.
But I don’t need to search for all the coaches who specialize in residential decluttering AND work in Oregon.
Does that make a difference in how to set it up?
Also, is search by state built in to the default setup? Are there default or included search fields?
Thanks!

That is exactly how the multiple category search works. You can search by any one of the groups individually. ie ” all the coaches in Oregon” or “all the coaches that specialize in residential decluttering”. But, you can also do “all the coaches who specialize in residential decluttering AND work in Oregon”. I know you do not need it but that option to query a search like this would work anyway. Actually no way to turn that off.
As for search by state, that is also in the multiple category search add-on. The site I link to as an example does not need it so it was configured not to be a search option.
Does that help?

GuestThanks Steven. I believe the multiple categories add on will work.
We will probably purchase the Pro Pack.
In the meantime, while I am entering data for entries, and I want to categorize them – do I need to check the box for the parent category or just the appropriate child categories?
And we will be wanting to use the Form extension that allows folks to add themselves to the listing – moderated though!

re: do I need to check the box for the parent category or just the appropriate child categories?
You can select just the child category, no need to check the parent. Without delving into the gory details… when selecting a child category, you are in effect also selecting the parent because the child is within the parent. Hope that makes sense.
re: we will be wanting to use the Form extension that allows folks to add themselves to the listing – moderated though!
Link is the addon which allows allows you to do that. Form adds the frontend editing capability.
Hope that helps!
