I am using a plugin called Ultimate Member through which I have added three additional roles (Member, Counselor, and Admin). None of the capability checkboxes are checked next to these roles and when I try to do so and click update, none of my changes are saved.

Just solved my own problem. I had to edit those specific Ulitmate Member roles from within the UM plugin.

Great to hear! perhaps UM “resets” role capabilities to whatever is set in its settings.
I’ve tested against the Members plugin and the Role Capabilities set in Connections are saved and are reflected on the Members Admin page too. So, UM must be doing something different when creating roles and assigning capabilities.
