ParticipantHi,
I’m just getting started using Connections, but it seems awesome so far. There is one issue I’m running into, though. I have a site where I want to have a few directories (e.g. staff, member, business). I’d like the staff and business directories to be public, but I’d like the member directory to require login.
I’ve set up categories for each of the directories (staff, member, etc.) and then added subdirectories for each. Then I added pages for each main category. I set the member directory page as the location of the directory and set it to require login, but then I selected to Enable Public Override. Then on the Staff and Business directory pages, I added the shortcode to allow_public_override=’true’.
That seemed to work as I was now (when not logged in) able to view the business directory without it requiring me to login, but when I went to the member directory page, I was no longer shown the login form. I didn’t have any public override shortcode on that page. I tried adding a shortcode to the member directory page, allow_public_override=’false’ to see if that would force the login, but it didn’t have any affect.
How should I set this up to allow some categories to be public and others to require a login?
Thanks!
Kurt

I read this a few times… so I hope I understand fully…
First, disable both the shortcode override options and remove the shortcode options. I do not think you need those. They’re old and really should be used but I’m stuck leaving them in there for backwards compatibility. You come across the one bug I have not been able to resolve due to chicken and egg issue…. the login form will not be shown if these overrides are enabled.
Disable the require login to view option.
Now, to make your member directory private set all entries that are to be private if they are not already. You can do this by filtering by your member directory category and then using the bulk action to set them to be private. Now those entries will only be visible to logged in users. But this will leave you with a page that says no results when a non-logged in user visits the member direct page. Not desirable. I suggest setting the page to be publish privately, that way only logged in users can even see the page and then toss a login widget in the sidebar. Or alternatively, keep the page public and use a plugin like Restrict Content to show a login form or the page contents depending on if the user is logged in or not.
I think this will accomplish your goals… if I understood correctly.
Hope that helps!

ParticipantThanks Steven, especially for responding so quickly. I’ll try to find a way to work the login form into the page’s design.

ParticipantI found a workable solution.
One other quick question. Does Connections have a registration form or do I just use the WordPress registration?
Thanks.

No, registration, you have to use WordPress or a plugin. That market is pretty well served already, not sure I’ll be adding to it… though I can see it being hugely beneficial if registration also created an entry so there would not need to be double entry of data.

GuestHello,
I have a question that some of the above post touch on, but is slightly different. I am using the connections plugin for a staff directory. I want to upload all of our employees information to the staff directory (including address and phone numbers). I then want this full directory to be private so that it is only viewable if logged in.
Now, I would like to make a certain fields of the above (staff directory) public. I want to create a employee list on a public page only showing: First/Last Name, Title, Organization, Department, and Email.
Is this possible? Thank you!

This should be possible. You would create a public directory and add all entries as public. The individual details such as addresses, phone numbers and email can be set to private… all individually. This is core/free feature built right into Connections.
I hope that answers your question.
