1) Can the initial sort order for directory entries be set to RANDOM?

My client is an association of home inspectors and on the Find and Inspector page they want the initial search results to be randomized so the inspectors with last names at the beginning of the alphabet don’t always show at the top of the list, so everyone gets a fair shot at being at the top.

Connections looks like it would give me better formatting for the output.

2) Will I be able to use the image map to initiate a directory search so I can keep this page http://www.ggashi.com/inspectors/alameda-county-inspectors/ but have the search results bring up a Connections directory page?

1) Connections does support many custom ordering options, but only set at the shortcode, it is not user select-able. Here’s the link to the doc page. One of the options are a random order, so that may suit your needs.

2) You could create an image map so it links to a specific sets of search results within Connections, but you would have to create the image map, Connections doesn’t have that built-in.

Thanks, that helps. I assume if I displayed a directory page for home inspectors in Alameda County in RANDOM order I could put a link on that page to go to another page filtered the same way but sorted by Last Name, or whatever. Not as elegant as and Ajax refresh, but I assume this would work. Am I correct?

One other question, are any of your display templates “responsive” or have alternative mobile device layouts?

Yes that would work. I have added it to my feature request list to add some sort of user select-able sort. When I add something like this it’ll likely be a feature of some of the premium templates.

Currently the best template for responsive themes are Tile and Tile Plus, primarily because they are already narrow. Instead side by side they’ll flow single column.
