Yes, that is one of the supported display options in the Enhanced Categories extension (if that is what you are using). The other is the image grid option.
What are you looking for exactly?

Yes, that is the correct behavior. Display all entries allowing the user to filter by category.
What you could do… instead of adding the link to the directory home page, you could link to the Connections View All Categories page in the site’s nav.

ParticipantShould I have set a view all up? Should I also have set up a page for each main category? I’m strying to have on my ‘homepage’ all the categories, but not all the people (only ones selected) what have I not done?

Enable the “View All Categories” result list action.
This will place a link above the directory which will be a link that shows nothing but the categories.
Copy this link.
Now, navigate to the WordPress Menus admin page under Appearance.
Replace the link to the directory page with a Custom Link. In the Custom Link item, paste the link that you copied and Link Text matching the page name.
After you save your updated menu… when you click on the directory page name in the menu of the site’s frontend, you will actually be take to the directory categories page. From their yo can click on a category to view the entries within the category.
Hope that helps!

You must first enable the “View All Categories” result list action.
The link will not display until you enable it.
