Is it possible to do this:
Sort by Category and Last_name, produce a listing with ALL categories, but have each category start as a header for its section of names.
I did this manually by creating a new connections sub selection for each category #. Is a cumbersome way to do it and pain to change options. I don’t think it would support Category selection.
Combine this example with the dropdown selection of individual categories to narrow the displaed names and the first item.

re: Sort by Category and Last_name, produce a listing with ALL categories, but have each category start as a header for its section of names.
Sorry, no grouping by category is not possible. With simple directories, it might would be doable but it would cause all sorts of issues for pagination and category filtering. The it really gets complicated with multiple level category hierarchies and entries assigned to more than one category.
re: I don’t think it would support Category selection.
Sorry, no, not really. You current setup I would actually recommend an even more complicated setup using two pages. I suggestion adding a new page named “Practitioner”. Do not add this page to your menus. On this page, add only the
[connections]shortcode with no options. Set the page as the directory home page. On your existing page add
force_home="true"to all the existing shortcodes. When the page is saved, all the “View Profile” links will not resolve to the new “Practitioner” page. You do this so the page intro and all the category headers will not be shown on the profile page.
Now, if you would like a makeshift category selection with your setup, you could add in page links. Give each of your headers an unique
id. Then at the top of your page add links to each of those

Steve I did this but its not working a expected.
I have a page called Practitioner with just [connections] in it.
The Home page reference is to “Practitioner”.
Here is one entry example from the detail page “Practitioners Directory” page:
[connections category=4 enable_category_select='FALSE' show_empty_categories='FALSE' show_category_count='FALSE' image_width=275 image_height=450 name_format="%first% %last%" show_title='TRUE' excerpt_length=50 excerpt_more=" ..." enable_map='FALSE' show_phone_numbers='FALSE' str_bio_head="Profile" str_note_head="Service Area" show_contact='TRUE' background_color="eaf3fc" show_addresses='FALSE' show_dates='FALSE' show_org='FALSE' force_home='TRUE']

Apologies, it seems there is a bug in the Gridder template. The
force_homeoption value is not being passed like it should.
This should work, instead add
home_id=xto all the existing shortcode where
xequals the page ID of the Practitioner page.
Hope that helps!09/21/2016 at 11:56 am #392462
Steven I got this to work, but going back to the original directory page doesn’t. If I click on the link to go back to the directory it takes me to the force_home page instead. Is there a way to change that behavior?
I also found my settings are dropped like enable_map=’FALSE’ are lost. But if I put them in the force_home page [connections] tag it works.09/21/2016 at 8:40 pm #392500

On the “Practitioner” page, try adding
home_id=xto the shortcode where
xequals the original page ID.
re: I also found my settings are dropped like enable_map=’FALSE’ are lost.
On the “Practitioner” page, I did say not to add any shortcode options … but, if you used any template specific shortcode options such as
enable_map=’FALSE’you should add them to this page too. Shortcode options do not “carry over” from one page to another that is why they are “lost”.
Hope that helps!
