It must be a plugin conflict. Unfortunately you’ll have to deactivate plugins one at a time to see which is causing the conflict. After each plugin deactivation, you’ll have to try to update an entry. If it saves, then the last plugin deactivated is the conflict. Once I know which one, I can track down why.
I also noticed… I tried to reset the Connections Roles settings even though the page refreshes and I receive the success message the roles are not reset. So something is interfering with that too. Additionally, not sure it is is related, but messages disappear after a few seconds, that is not core WordPress behaviour. I wonder if there is a connection…

GuestI tried deactivating the plugins, but the update never worked. I did find the one that was causing the notifications to collapse, however, it didn’t affect the update on connections (that was a plugin for adding multiple users).
Would the theme affect the backend in such a way?

It’s possible. You could try switching to TwentyTwelve to see if the issue persists. If temporily switching themes is not an option, you could send me a copy of your theme (post a link to it as a private reply). Then I can install it to see if it is the cause of the issue.

GuestI tried switching to the Twenty Twelve theme, but was still unable to add a custom field to an existing record. I also tried disabling all plugins with the exception of Connections without success.

GuestAdded Note: I was looking at the structure of the connections tables in the database and manually added an entry to the “metadata” table. This added the custom field to an existing record. I then attempted to change the value through the connections interface, which actually worked. So, updating values for existing custom fields works, just not adding a custom field.

Ok, that definitely helps narrow down the issue. Can you try one adding a new entry and then add a new custom field? I’m wondering if the issue might be that a custom field couldn’t be added until one actually exists in the database. Also, could I get FTP access so I can take a real close look? One other user seems to be having the problem too so I’d like to figure out exactly why this is popping up only for a couple and get it fixed.
