Looking at the page the most likely cause is the memory allocated to PHP has been exhausted causes PHP to stop running. My suggestion is to try increasing this amount. Try 128MB.
See this excellent blog post on how to do it. Since every host is different, which method that will work is unknown. My suggestion would to be start at the top and work your way until the issue is, hopefully, resolved.

I’m pretty certain the issue was the memory being exhausted … or maybe … I just noticed that you’re using a custom template, it could be whatever changes were made to the template is not 100% compatible with 8.1. Not knowing the changes to the template, it wouldn’t really be possible to know if that is the cause or not. One test you can do, is if you update again, switch to one of the templates that come with Connections, if the template displays fine, then you know the custom template is the cause.
