ParticipantHi Steven,
For the third time in 6 months we ran into the problem that suddenly the profile pictures are not displayed anymore (see attachment). Every time our developer can solve the problem by changing the database via FTP, but we don’t understand why it happens so often. Is this a known problem?
Kind regards,
Rolf DiepeveenAttachments:

No, this is not a know issue. FIrst time I’ve heard of such an issue. What exactly does you dev change? Can I get a login so I can take a look? Login details can be posted here as a private reply.

ParticipantHi Steven,
When this problem occurs, we see a new htaccess file In the wp-content/uploads folder:
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ – [L]
RewriteRule (.*) /index.php?uamfiletype=attachment&uamgetfile=$1 [L]
</IfModule>
It only affects Connections, probably because of the fact that connections has a seperate folder for images in the uploads folder.
Removing this file solves the problem, but every now and then the file is back.
The site is hosted at Siteground and it might come from there. Hosting providers tend to do their own optimization things without nofification.
Regards,Rolf

There’s nothing I can do about this. The htaccess with this rule will prevent anything from loading in the uploads folder that is not specifically uploaded using the WordPress Media Manager. This rule will actually break quite a few plugins because this is the folder as a matter of best practices where uploads should be saved.
I too use SiteGround so I’m fairly certain this is not a rule being auto applied by them. A quick Google shows that this is actually being added by the User Access Manager plugin. My guess anytime you upgrade that plugin, it checks the uploads folder and if it is missing adds it again.
There is an “Lock Files” option on the plugin’s settings page not to add this file. Disable this option and you should not longer have this issue. If you wish to protect the uploads folder, there are far better rules you could use which are not as restrictive. One rule I use is I prohibit the access to php files and only allow access to a defined set file types such as various image and text file formats.
I hope this helps!

ParticipantThanks so much Steven; this was exactly the problem. We switched off the ‘Lock files’ function in UAM and will find another solution for protecting pdf files.

Good to hear!
You can likely use .htaccess rules to protect other files or you could use the UAM rule but add an rule to allow the access to the images in the connections upload folder.

ParticipantThank you!
We added a .htaccess file with the code below to the connections-images directory.
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine Off
</IfModule>This seems to work.
