    I followed the steps in this FAQ: http://connections-pro.com/faqs/how-do-i-import-categories/ and separated the new categories I want to create via CVS import and they are not being created. For instance, I have “Categories” as the column Heading then Trust, CT (where Trust and CT are two different categories separated with the comma as stated in the FAQ) and what happens is Trust is created as a category, but with left quote marks and CT is added as my First Address line with right quote marks.

    Please help!

    The instructions are correct for a CSV file, that said, it sounds like you entering your data into a spreadsheet app. A spreadsheet is not a CSV … a spreadsheet app can save the file as a CSV file and when it does, it will add the necessary quotes. Put another way, in your spreadsheet, do not add the quotes, only separate the categories with commas.

    I am using Excel and saving as an CSV file (not a spreadsheet), so that won’t work? I am not adding any quotes myself…I’m adding a comma between multiple categories. I am doing everything as stated in your FAQ…and it’s not working as it said it would.

    Excel is a spreadsheet app. Saving it from Excel as a CSV file will work fine. The issue you are experiencing, from my experience, can only happen when the info is being manually quoted in the spreadsheet. For me to further diagnose the issue, I’ll need to see the CSV file you are importing. Please change the .csv to .txt and attach it as a reply and I’ll take a look at it immediately after receiving it.

    Hmmm I do see quotes in the txt file, but I never added any to the Excel created cvs file. How can I stop that from happening? I am not manually adding those quotes.

    This is correct. Excel should be adding the quotes otherwise that would create an invalid CSV file. Like I said, it’ll add the necessary quotes.

    When imported, two categories should be created. One for “Trust and Probate” and another for “CT”. The entry should be linked to both.

    I test imported the file and it imported correctly with the settings for Fields delimited by: set to Tab and the setting for Fields enclosed by: set to Double Quotes

    That said…

    Excel exported CSV files do work fine, however, Excel also has a history not doing a so great of a job at it. It could be that it worked for me fine because merely saving the file could have corrected text encoding errors cause by Excel. Try using LibreOffice instead saving the CSV out as comma separated and fields double quoted (it’ll as).
