ParticipantHey Steven,
You likely thought I gave up on this, huh? :)
After a couple of months focused on a huge implementation of another project, I am back to thinking about the whole geoification of Connections.
I just recently elected to NOT renew my other maps mashup plugin… so it’s Locate or bust for me now.
Dare I ask, how’s it going?

Well actually. This summer without a doubt… I need to get it released. Here’s a link a demo of my current working version (depending on when you visit it may or may not be working due to me working on it):
http://sandbox.connections-pro.com/geo-prototype/
One item to notice as you visit… the browser will ask permission to use your location. If you accept, Locate will use it to show the entries within the area you are located. If you deny permission, it fallback to geo-locating your IP address and show you local entries based on that. Nowhere near as accurate but for most users it’ll be in the ballpark, so to speak.
Another feature of note, when you start typing an address or zipcode to search, it’ll autocomplete.
Write now it has no settings other than a few shortcode options (3)… I’m contemplating finishing up the mapinfo bubble with entry details and a get directions action and releasing it as is adding features as they are asked for.

ParticipantSaw that demo link when I rummaged through map posts here last night. Interesting. I have half dozen initial questions. How you want me to handle?
Post here? email?
You at the point where I can throw it on sandbox and test further?
LMK.
Thanks for the timely followup. Have a great day!

ParticipantThis summer without a doubt…
Excellent, because, you know, summer starts in like 5 days. :)
Please shoot me what you have, I’d love to start messing with it.
I see you are still working on the infobubble – excellent, the ability to put maybe a small image/logo, customizable (length) excerpt and then link to the listing will be great.
I assume we can preset the zoom we want on the map? And re-center based on search results?
I am curious if we can just skip the check of the ip? (I mean mine shows up 110 miles from my house, so it’s not always reliable). Where it’s just a Preset area map displaying all/filtered listings, and if the user wants directions, the they can put in an address (maybe via a link in a specific listing infobubble) or, if on mobile, then do some triangulation magic or something. (details above my paygrade).
Love the autofill of address/zip. That is a great feature. And related, I’m not sure what use I have for the Long/Lat boxes below, can they be eliminated, or are they needed for something else?
You’ve made great progress starting from basically scratch. If you weren’t so determined to put out a great product on day One, you probably would have been able to throw a release out months ago. :)
Thanks for your efforts here. My credit card is standing by. :)

The bubble I was only going to add the image or logo as a user config option the name, the preferred or first address and the preferred or first phone number, link to entry details and link for driving directions… pretty standard stuff actually. I am not going to add an excerpt, that said… Locate relies on the templating engine built into Connections, even for the info bubble. What this means is one could create the own info bubble showing exactly what they want or even just use a template override file to override the existing info bubble template.
Yes, the map will recenter based on search results automatically. This is already built in.
I plan on making the location based results optional. Right now it simply uses the location supplied by the browser (if permitted) falling back to the IP address. The option will be to turn this off and default to the country/state set on the Connections : Settings admin page under the General tab. Maybe… just maybe… I’ll add a shortcode option for a manual lat/long center to be set, well see.
This lat/long inputs, they’ll be hidden. Right now they are visible only for debugging.
Credit card standing by :) … so, I have an idea of what I want to charge for this… what do you think the price for this should be? I’m curios.

ParticipantOn the infobubble, maybe an 10-12 word excerpt is too much, I thought it would be a nice option for a ‘Premium” listing though. Just a thought.
The ability to set a default map view (without browser/ip) is a pretty important feature, I hope it finds its way into it.
So as you know I’ve tested about 15 maps plugins, including several premium versions. These were based on standard WP stuff, not able to (easily) be used in Connections. The best of these was $24.95, the second best was $19.99, the third $17.
Based on your track-record, I know you’ll bring this to market at a fair and reasonable price (in fact, probably cheaper than what you could charge). :)

Hmmm, yes, I was thinking about $25.

ParticipantWill we be able to modify the map output based on the category of the listing?
Use case: We provide a free listing to selected businesses, but because of the sheer quantity of listings, we may want to have a map that only outputs those that are “premier” listings, or maybe those that are “pro and premier” – that sort of thing.
And in keeping with this theme, we don’t provide logo and excerpt information of the freebies in the directory, but we do on the plus/premier. IF we were to elect to have the “freemium” listings on a map, we’d want to have a way to only show certain of the infobubble field (e.g. logo/phone…) to those listings that were categorized as Pro or Premier.
Does this make sense? Will this be doable?
Thanks.
