ParticipantIn Connections Advanced settings, if I enable Links=> Name links, when you click the name, the page displays duplicate entries, one for each category the entry is in (e.g. https://newsite.chem.ufl.edu/faculty-and-research/name/c-james/ ).
Is there a way to turn this off and only show the individual entry once?
If not, a great feature would be to show ONE entry (no duplicates) and simply list the categories (just like the cMAP template does). Thanks,
Steve K. for Dwight.
P.S. I didn’t see this question in the forum; if I missed it, sorry about that. :)09/22/2015 at 5:03 pm #347796Steven Zahm

This is doing pretty much what you are asking it to do… I’ll illustrate with an example… You have a button shortcode, you put this shortcode on the page many times and that button shows for each instance the shortcode was added. This is the same thing happening with Connections. The shortcode is on the page many times, so you’ll have output for each instance of the shortcode on the page. Make sense?
Now, that said, Connections being as flexible as it is, there is a way to manage this type of setup. here’s how:
Create a new page. The name of the page is not relevant but should applicable.
The content of this new page should be the
[connections]shortcode and nothing else.Save the page and take note of the page ID, You’ll need it. You can find it in the browser address bar as part of the URL.
Go to your original directory page and add the home_id shortcode option. You shortcode on the page should look something like this:
[connections home_id="n"]Save the page.
No when the links in the directory are clicked, they will resolve to the new page.
Hope that helps!

ParticipantSteven, that worked perfectly! Thank you so much.
Unfortunately, this revealed an issue from CSV Import.
When testing my spreadsheet to ‘perfect’ the formatting of my data for CSV Import, several errors occurred on my end, including incorrect insertion of first/middle/last names, etc.So when I look at the individual pages, sometimes the name in the link looks correct, like this:
Alexander Angerhofer
https://newsite.chem.ufl.edu/people/name/alexander-angerhofer/And other times the name in the link is using the wrong name (or using the the middle initial-firstname instead of firstname-lastname):
Rodney J. Bartlett
https://newsite.chem.ufl.edu/people/name/j-rodney/So this means that the slug is now incorrect for these names (the data table is wp_38_connections). I even went into Connectons => Manage and changed the name manually that way, but the slug doesn’t change. If someone changes their name (e.g. if they get married), shouldn’t the slug change as well?
When I do the CSV Import, I don’t see a field to define the slug value, or a way to change it in Connections=> Manage. Is there some other way to change the slug? Or do I need to delete all my data and re-populate it? I hate to do that because I manually uploaded photos for them (and just changing the slug also “removes” the image). I probably can write some php to modify the database if I must, but I’d prefer not to do that and risk making more of a mess.
Sorry to bring you all these strange occurrences.
:)
Thanks again!

Right the slug is not editable. This can only be changed directly in the db or you can click the Copy action link on the entry you want of change the slug. This will create a duplicate entry that when saved will have a new slug created. Of course you’ll have to delete the old duplicate and then update your CSV entry ID.
Hope that helps!

ParticipantOk, I was afraid of that.
If, for example, “Lisa Smith” gets divorced and changes to her maiden name, “Lisa Jones”, I don’t think she will be happy to have to keep using …/lisa-smith as the link to her profile. Oh well, maybe in future updates you’ll consider updating shortcodes when people change their names.
:)
I’ll figure something out. Thanks!

Well, name changes aren’t frequent I would image that the copy/change name/save would be workable. Yes?

ParticipantOk, sorry to bring this up again, but we just went “live” and the name links are not working, when this WAS working before! Weird.
We changed the site name/url from “https://newsite.chem.ufl.edu” to “https://www.chem.ufl.edu”. Could changing the site name have “confused” Connections? For example, check out:
https://www.chem.ufl.edu/faculty-and-research/divisions/analytical/
When you click on a name, like “Willard W. Harrison” for example, it gives you this link, which says “404 Error: file or page not found”:
https://www.chem.ufl.edu/people/name/willard-harrison/On the analytical page is the following shortcode, as per your instructions (which worked before we went live):
[connections <b>home_id=663</b> enable_search="false" enable_category_select="false" category='74' page_limit=200 order_by='last_name|SORT_ACS,first_name|SORT_ASC' str_work_email='Email' str_work_phone='Phone' str_work_fax='Fax' str_work_addr='Address' str_other_addr='Office']Page ID#663 is:
https://www.chem.ufl.edu/people/
which has this shortcode:
[connections enable_search="false" enable_category_select="false" page_limit=200 order_by='last_name|SORT_ACS,first_name|SORT_ASC' str_work_email='Email' str_work_phone='Phone' str_work_fax='Fax' str_work_addr='Address' str_other_addr='Office']Any ideas as to why the link on the connections names would stop working?
If https://www.chem.ufl.edu/people/name/willard-harrison/ is supposed to access “williard-harrison” on the /people/ page (ID=663), why does it give page not found error? Could it have something to do with changing the name and url of the site?Thank you so much for your help, Steve, as always!

ParticipantP.S. I tried removing the “home_id=663” and clicking the name changed as expected to https://www.chem.ufl.edu/faculty-and-research/divisions/analytical/name/richard-yost/ but this also gave the 404 error.
Not sure if that helps or not.
Thanks again!

Sounds like you might need to flush the page permalink cache in WordPress. Here’s how…
Go to the WordPress Permalinks Settings admin page. That’s it… just visiting the page should flush the cache.
If that does not work, go back to the Permalinks Settings admin page and click the Update change, making no changes. That will definitely flush the cache.
If that does not work, go to the Connections : Settings admin page, click the Advanced tab, make sure the slugs for all the permalink bases have values and then click the Update button.
Hope that helps, let me know.

ParticipantOMG!!! You rock! Going to settings=>permalinks did the trick. I would NEVER have guessed to do that. I’ll definitely make a not of that! Thanks again.
As always, thank you so much for your excellent and SPEEDY solution!
