ParticipantUgh. No :(
Going from here: http://sworks.theniagaraguide.com/niagara-recreation-homepage/
Clicking on martial arts still takes me to a page that doesn’t show the proper featured listings.
Not sure what I’m doing wrong :(

ParticipantThis is the code I’m using on the base test page:
<h2>Featured Listings</h2>
[connections category=615 template="gridder"]
<h3>Free Listings</h3>
[connections category=393 template="tile-plus" enable_category_select='FALSE' enable_search='FALSE']
Clicking on the Connections link to martial arts from the recreation homepage brings me here: http://sworks.theniagaraguide.com/base-test-page/cat/martial-arts/
Like I said, it feels so close, but I can’t figure it out.

While testing, make sure you have page caching disabled. I suspect as you make changes, you are not seeing the results because and old cached version is being served.

ParticipantHi Steven,
Yep. Thought of that. When testing I disable the cache at the CDN, plus the WP-Rocket plugin, plus clear the cache on the browser every time I close it.
As far as I can tell, the Category Homepage addon you suggested is only able to display one category on a page. My challenge is I need to display two categories – featured and non-featured. If Connections can display two categories on an auto-generated page, I haven’t figured it out.
I’m thinking of course that Connections wasn’t designed two show two categories when auto-generating pages. That’s probably the issue. I’m asking for something the plugin’s not designed for. No fault of the plugin, of course.
If I’m missing something, please let me know. Thanks for your help Stephen!

RE: As far as I can tell, the Category Homepage addon you suggested is only able to display one category on a page.
It does not display anything in fact. This only allows you to choose a page which a category link should resolve to filtered by the selected category. I think that filtered bit is the part that is not making it work the way you need. I now think this addon is close but not exactly what you need. I think a simple change is all that is required to tweak it to meet you needs. I’d be willing to log in to your site real quick and make the change to find out :)
I think I perhaps was not understanding correctly the desired results. I think the perhaps the simplest solution is going to be the easiest.
On your recreation landing page, instead of using the links for the Connections categories using the shortcode you manually link to the correct pages. eg. add “Martial”, highlight it in the edit and click the link button and choose the base text page. You will then be able to use the featured/free shortcodes without the page being filtered by a category.
The downside is that you will have to maintain these links manually which might not be a huge issue if the categories will mostly remain static.
It does look like you may have already thought of this based on the “Recreation Categories” section on the pages.

Ok, I logged in and made the tweak. Is the result what you are looking to achieve now? I can not tell as I’m still not quite 100% sure.

ParticipantGood morning Steven,
Success :)
I see you can now set the categories to redirect to a specific page. Great! I set the Martial Arts category to go to the martial arts page I’d set up. Worked as hoped.
I then hid the Featured Martial Arts category via the CSS method I’d worked out earlier.
I think this does it. Thank you so much for your help!!!

Great to hear! I think is you move all your featured categories to a “Featured” parent category, you could not have use CSS to hide them.
fyi, since the Category Homepage plugin was altered, you should never update it otherwise that tweak I made will be lost. I recommend making a reliable backup of it so you always have it on hand.
