ParticipantHi Steven,
Thanks for all your research and thoughtful explanation! I think we would be comfortable with a budget of $150 to $200. Our requirements appear to be quite similar to Kim. Namely:
First, for the select drop down on the card.php, have the categories shown in a two-level hierarchical list manually sorted. We would like to have the ability to toggle on/off the select-ability of the parent categories.
Our specific use case for the search box is to be able to select these children categories (but not the parent categories such as AGES, ENVIRONMENTS, etc.) in this order:
AGES - PreK - K5 - 6th-8th - 9th-12th - Higher Ed - Other ENVIRONMENTS - After School - Agency / Mental Health - Education / Classroom Program - Families & One-on-One - Foster Care / Probation - Other PROFESSION/ROLE - Classroom Teacher - Mental Health Professional - Outside Provider - School Administrator - OtherSecond, for the card-single.php, we would like to be able to have some way to reference a single top level category (such as AGES, above) by its slug (preferred) or ID and have it return the active children categories for that contact record, respecting the manual sort order.
Welcome your thoughts, and thank you!

Ahhh, yeah what I was originally thinking as a solution would have never worked for you. The terms meta is definitely the way to go. This would work for the
card-single.phpfile too but you would have to create a custom template override file for it to add the functions to list the assigned children by the referenced parent. It would have to be by term ID though, not slug because the relationships are based on the ID. ID/s are safer to use anyway because they will not change, slugs can.Hopefully this is within @ Kims budget too, hope to hear back soon. I could start working on this after I complete my current custom project and release version 8.1.6 (this project would require code in 8.1.6 anyway).

ParticipantHi Steven & David,
I’m not sure we need to get this yet. I’ve done a work around that my client might be fine with. I just made parent categories of Class Subjects, Gender, Languages Spoken. Everything is still in alphabetical order but that might be okay. Since the subjects are the most important category to search, I named the subject “class subjects” to make them show at the top of the list.
If you do this extension for Steven, please keep your solution handy so that I can offer it to my client if it becomes necessary. Thanks so much.

ParticipantHi Steve
I just read through this thread because I was looking for a way to limit and re-order the categories in the dropdown menu. I wanted them to show in a selected order (not alpha-order) and leave off certain categories. If this becomes a feature or an add-on, I’ll be a very happy camper!
Thanks,

ParticipantSpecifically, I want to have the drop-down menu show:
Faculty
Staff
Divisions
(then list the 6 divisions in a specific, non-alpha order)
And not show “uncategorized” as an option. That would be a worthwhile functionality and I would certainly pay for the add-on.

This was released a few weeks ago. It is the Custom Category Order extension. Sound like it do exactly what you’re asking.
As for hiding “Uncategorized”, if it an empty category and you’re using one of the available commercial template sold here you can add
show_empty_categories='false'to the shortcode to hide it.Hope that helps!

ParticipantHI Steve
I just installed that extension and my categories all disappeared! So I deactivated and got my categories back. Holy cow, that was scary! Any idea why that may have happened?
Thanks,

You do need to be running Connections >= 8.2 to use this extension. Are you update to date?
The Custom Category Order extension is very safe as it make no permanent changes to the database.

ParticipantYes, I am running 8.2.2. Has anyone else had this problem?
