ParticipantHi Steve, hope you aren’t cringing to see my name again so soon…! I’ll try to be brief…
When one clicks on a company’s classification (the category that you customized to display on a tile for organizations and families), one is taken to a page with breadcrumbs at the top. This is the only page on the site that displays breadscrumbs and that is ideal.
Ex: Home » Buyer’s Guide Classification » Contractors/Concrete
Here’s the issue that the client discovered: If one clicks on “Buyer’s Guide Classification” in the breadcrumb, I’m sure it works exactly how it is supposed to, but it doesn’t make sense for this particular directory as it ends up taking you to a page that resembles the home page except has a set of breadcrumbs. So even though the URLS are different, the result is nearly identical when one clicks on “Home” versus “Buyer’s Guide Classification” in the breadcrumb.
I have 2 goals:
– Most importantly, to manually set the parent breadcrumb to direct to the actual Buyer’s Guide page that is on the main site navigation menu (I understand this makes it less of a “true” breadcrumb, but it will help the viewer navigate the site)
– Remove “Home” from the breadcrumbI also understand that the 1st goal would probably break the ability to have breadcrumbs on other pages, but this classifications category will always be the only time breadcrumbs are ever used, so I’m hoping it might be possible.
Is this doable? If it requires further customization, please let me know what you think the quote would be. Thanks in advance!
PS – I know the breadcrumb is displaying huge, but this was a request from the client as they felt that the page title was distracting/confusing and wanted to emphasize that folks are viewing a category, so please ignore the size…

lol, not at all. I like little challenges.

In short, yes and yes it requires further customization. Sometimes I need to do it in order to figure out how… if that makes any sense… so..
I made the changes that I believe accomplishes what you need. Take a look.
The change to the “Buyer’s Guide Classification” permalink was accomplished with a filter added to your custom Connections plugin. The thing that is important to remember about this tweak, it is dependent on the category ID and the page of of the “Buyer’s Guide” page, so it is not portable. If you move this plugin you would either have to disable the filter or change the ID/s accordingly.
To hide the “Home” in the breadcrumb. The quickest easiest method I could think of was hiding it with CSS. The problem was there was not enough HTML markup available to select just the home link and separator. So, I edited the core Connections plugin to add this required HTML, some spans and classes. Then I added to the theme’s styles.css file via the theme style editor the required CSS to hide it. This change will make it in the next Connections update so it will be safe to upgrade without losing this tweak.
As for a quote/invoice, we can take that discussion via email.
