Just started playing with the connections plugin. I build sites for therapists and have been asked if I can build a site featuring a directory for therapists who are located world wide.
My requirements are:
Searchable directory by country, county/state, town
Search Name of therapist
Search by Skill level i.e level 1 level 2 qualified etc.A search something like the dropdown search or accordion section on the showcase site at https://sscit.org/ would be good.
Also would like that the therapist can login and edit their own entry.
Could you please let me know what extensions and templates would be required for this funstionality.

The sscit.org site does have quite a bit of custom coding built upon Connections. That said, i sounds like Connections will meet your requirements. I’ll answer question in more detail…
RE: Searchable directory by country, county/state, town
The advanced search addon does have options to search by country and state. When enabled these are presented and searchable drop downs. The town (city) would be searched by the keyword search field, if enabled.

The name is searched by the keyword search field.
RE Search by Skill level i.e level 1 level 2 qualified etc.
If you assign the skill level as categories, this would work with the advanced search addon.

The Link addon would add this functionality.

The advanced search addon is one I supply, on request, to those that purchase either the Pro Pack or the Extension Pro Pack.
I would recommend at least the cMap template and the Extension Pro Pack OR just the Pro Pak to get all the features you require.
