ParticipantGood Morning,
I have my directory set to display the entries in random order using the shortcode. On my lap top I am seeing correctly, the entries appearing randomly on the landing page, every hour. However, on my mobile device the landing page has not appeared differently since I first put the random order code in yesterday morning. Note, when I click the category drop down and click “show all categories” it gives me a different order, which appears to be the random order that I seek for my landing page. Below, I have posted a response from a past issue, which may be related to this one. I am not sure if it is related but your response is below and if you need to reference/ Post count: 12790
“Oh, I see. There is a display bug on mobile. This has been fixed and will the fix will be included in the next update that I’m going to try to push out tomorrow or next week at the latest.
I’m assuming you are suing the cMap template, correct? If you are when you configured the strings for the select make sure you configure both the default select string and the show all category string accordingly.”

Sound like you are logged into your site on your desktop and not mobile and using page caching. If you are using page caching, you should exclude the directory page otherwise you’ll just serve the cached page until it expires.

You asked this yesterday, here’s my response. I would need to install Query Monitor on your site and view the queries in order to determine the issue. Like I mentioned in my previous reply, my guess is that seed for the randomization is different.
The strings for the select drop down would not affect this, that issue was only in regards to changing the label text. That update was released, so you should have it.

I logged in…
I selected a category to filter by and then selected the show all categories option. No matter how many times I switch to filtering by a category and then choosing show all or navigating to the page directly… the initial order and the order when selecting view all are the same, not different.
Am I misunderstanding how to replicate the issue? Maybe, can you give me the exact steps to reproduce the issue will help.
As for mobile, I visited the page and did the same category switching and that seems fine too.
After an hour I’ll visit again to make sure the randomization seed has changed to confirm randomization is working, or not.
So, far, it seems like it is working exactly how it should.

ParticipantIn short, the problem is that the random order short code is displaying correctly on my laptop but not on my mobile device, or the several others mobile devices that I have tested. On the mobile devices, the same business is at the top of the list every time for the past 72 hours or so, which is Mark’s services. Please advise, Thanks

I just revisited the site using my phone again, and the entries were in a different order. My first view, Mark and Maria was the first two, now I see Josh and Michael as the first two. I’ll visit again, but on my mobile, they do seem to be randomizing as they should.

ParticipantThat is strange. I have tested it on 4 different mobile devices (2 android, 2 iPhone) over the past 72 hours or so and the same result on all phones, Mark’s first, Denzel’s second, Kristen’s third and Pedro’s fourth.
Can you see any reason why it would work on your mobile but not mine and three other peoples? I will ask a fifth person to test it out while waiting to hear back, Thanks, Jim

Now I see…
Like I originally said, you should exclude the page from your page cache. You’re running the Endurance Page Cache plugin. So…
When you navigate to the directory you see the cached page (when not logged in, ie. the mobile devices). This cached page will be served by the page cache plugin until it expires (which appears to be weekly [or daily, depends on precise which version of .1 is installed on your site).
When you select a category, the page is not being served from the cache, when you change the drop down to display all, you are seeing the uncached page.
This is why you are not seeing the page change and why you see different results when choosing the show all category option.
There does not appear to be any options for this cache plugin so I installed Code Snippets and added a filter which should tell Endurance Page Cache not to cache the directory page.
Hope that helps!

ParticipantThanks Steven!
One more question. On the site in question, why does the directory give one random list on the landing page and then another list when clicking the drop down and selecting “show all categories”? In other words, how is the directory sorting the “show all categories” option, Just curious, Thanks!

As explained in my last reply, this too was being caused by the page cache being served when landing directly on the page and the uncached page being server when you selected view all. If you visit now, the same random order is displayed both when directly navigating to the page and when selecting view all.
Hope that helps!
