GuestI’m frustrated – at both me and you
- Me because judging by how widely used this plugin is, it’s obvious I’m being a dufas in not being able to figure out even the basics of how to get started.
- You for not having a step-by-step guide in the documentation section for people like me.
Is there ANY way I can talk you into creating a brand new site membership directory, and putting it on YouTube (then linking that to your documentation page)?
IF you want specifics – in editing the page where the directory is supposed to display, I don’t have the foggiest idea what to do beyond putting
< h1>Here is your directory< /h1>
[connections]Sadly, doing that by itself doesn’t look much like a directory listing.
What I really want is something that looks like the very first sample in the showcase (https://www.chem.ufl.edu/faculty-and-research/)

I am devoted to spending the remaining of the year at beefing up the documentation for the core Connections plugin. I added a doc page for the Connections : Tools admin page last week. This week I am working on the Connections : Settings admin page doc page.
As for creating a how to for a membership site, I had no plans on doing that because Connections is not a membership plugin. Generally users use the core WordPress registration to create a minimal membership site and then use the Visibility status of posts to define whether a user can see the post depending if they are logged in or not. Other users who require a more robust membership site use membership plugins like Restrict Content Pro. In essence the directory is only one part of their membership site.
Something to consider and hope it helps!

GuestI think you misunderstood. When I say “membership” – I mean a “membership DIRECTORY”. ie. a listing of the members in the club. What I’m asking for (as a part of your documentation) is a video that shows people how to build that directory listing. Ie – how do you use the shortcodes to get the directory to get the look you want. With suggestions on which templates or extensions a person might choose to achieve that look & feel.
As for the login, it appears that there is already a plugin for that? Created by you?

GuestTo give a bit more data: in my other life (ie. not as a beekeeper) I have a Masters in Adult Education. Which is to say – I understand a bit on “how people learn”.
Only about 40% of the population learns by reading (Auditory Learners – since reading is based more on the brain centers with hearing than vision). This is the portion of your audience that writing documentation will help.
Another 40% of the population learns by seeing (Visual Learners). This is where a video can really help. You’ll essentially double your market by doing videos.
The other 20% learn kinestheticly (by touching). Unless you’re willing to sit with them as they do things, it’s hard to reach this segment.

Yes, I did misunderstand. Apologies!

I do plan on this after I have finished revamping the written docs. There are already a few third party video tutorials.
- How to add someone to your staff directory
- How to change the template used in your directory
- How to edit or delete someone from your staff directory
- How to specify the order your staff is displayed in the directory
- Add a New Entry
- How to Add an Individual
Of course these are no substitute for creating my own but these are available now and may be useful for you to review. I watched each one and the information provided is accurate.
re: As for the login, it appears that there is already a plugin for that? Created by you?
Yes, that plugin is from me and is just a simply little login plugin.

Thanks for the information regarding those numbers on how adults learn. It is helpful to know that spending time making the videos will be that useful. I’m guessing you are a visual learner enhance the request for a video tutorial. Like I said I do plan on making this but I need to write it first to give me a base to work from. Until then, I am available to answer your questions.
Reviewing this thread I realized I never answered your original question IF you want specifics – in editing the page where the directory is supposed to display, I don’t have the foggiest idea what to do beyond putting

[connections]The most basic step after this is to add public entries which I actual do talk about in step 3 of the quick start guide.
