    Hi Steve

    I have a couple of the premium templates, but for my particular purpose I actually prefer the plainer templates. However, I’d like to enable a search function and also a alphabet function (show each a link to each letter) on the front end. I’d be happy to use a premium template, but I want one that is very simple, with no border or drop shadow. In fact I want just names to display, with a link to the bio entry.

    Is there a hidden feature or a simple template that does that?

    There really is not an easy way to add search to one of the basic templates. However the character index is available to all templates. It can be enabled on the Connections : Settings admin page under the Display tab. You can also force it on with a shortcode option, like so:

    [connections show_alphaindex='true']

    To list just a list of names you can use the names template that comes with Connections. It is the same templates used when clicking the View All link if that is enabled. You can force it to be used without setting it as the activate template using the shortcode option like so:

    [connections templates='names']

    This is helpful – I thought the alpha index was specific to certain templates – didn’t realize it was universal. I really want the search function though, so maybe I’ll need to use a premium template (I have no problem paying for templates – well worth it!). What do you suggest as the most flexible template – one that I can pare down to include very little info?

    Separate issue, got it … may I suggest the Slim Plus template then. It has just the name and includes the search and you can turn things off/on as needed.

    Will that do the trick?

    Hi,

    We cannot get the show_alphaindex attribute to work for any template, and the setting is both turned on in settings -> display, and as the shortcode. What are we missing?

    First, try this…

    Remove the show_alphaindex shortcode option from the shortcodes you are using it and ensure the option is enabled in the settings. Actually, remove all shortcode options if you are using any others (for testing).

    Does the index show now? If not, Please share a link to your directory page.
