ParticipantHi,
We have connections with CMAP and Link installed. When we go to roles, the view public entries is missing from all user roles. All users can view the directory, it is just when a user (non-admin) logs in that they can’t see any results. “No results” is displayed. Users can add and edit their own entry. When the user logs out they can view the directory. Here is the link:

Unless you have the login required option checked in the settings the view public entries option will not appear in the role capabilities. So… looking at your site, it does not appear that login is required, so that option should not appear. I hope that makes sense!
What is you exact shortcode you are using?
On the Connections : Settings admin page under the General tab; do you have either of the options for shortcode visibility option enabled? If you do, uncheck both and save.

ParticipantHi Steve,
Thanks for your help on this. Our shortcode is:
[connections str_select_all='Show All Regions' str_select='Select Region' show_empty_categories='false' str_contact='Teacher' str_school_addr='Dojo:' str_home_phone='Phone' str_cell_phone='Mobile' str_personal_email='Email' str_bio_head='Further Information' str_bio_show='More Details' str_bio_hide='Close Details' str_note_head='Class Times...' str_note_show='Class Times' str_note_hide='Close Class Times' image_fallback='none' tray_image_fallback='none']I thought I’d fixed the problem by setting private in the options you mentioned above but we now seem to be having problems with category search. It isn’t always displaying the default select region and results aren’t as expected. Selecting all regions (regions are categories) doesn’t seem to work when using the initial letter to access a club and then using the search criteria box to return to all regions.
The scenario is members can add an entry (all entries are public) via Link. So all users whether logged in or not should see all entries. By setting the private option it fixed the problem that logged in users were receiving “no results” when viewing the club directory.
Would it help to give you access?04/11/2014 at 11:44 am #288297Ian Walters

The issue is the cache plugin. You need to make sure the Connections page is excluded from the cache… or make sure the cache of that page is cleared after every change.
I installed User Switching for testing as other users. I left it installed as it is super handy to be able to bounce into user accounts to see what they see when troubleshooting.
I also changed the menu item for the directory from a page to a link. I linked to the directory page but added
?nocache=truethe to link. That should help a little if you do not exclude the directory page from the cache. Two areas adding this link will not help is with pagination and filtering the list by character. Those links are generated dynamically and can not have the nocache query string added to the URL. The cache plugin should ignore switching categories and search because of query variables in the URL being used.I also noticed that most your users are a custom role named “Teachers” I added the add/edit entry capabilities in Connections for that role.
I hope that makes sense and helps.

ParticipantThanks for your help. I’ll look into upgrading the cache so I can exclude specific urls.

ParticipantHi Steve,
I have tested this with and without the cache being set and page caching for logged in members disabled. This should fix previous problem.
When I select from the category search it works ok. When I select a letter B N or S it works OK, but I can’t then use the category search. Selecting all regions doesn’t work at all i.e. it isn’t active and the other display “no results”.
We appreciate your help with this.Cheers

When filtering by character and then selecting a category, you’re filtering by both. For example, clicking “N” and then selecting the “East Midlands” will return a single result because only one exists in both. I realize that filtering by character can be confusing, but on large directories, this is pretty much required. On my todo list today is adding a link to the characters to clear the character filter which really will simply be a link to the directory home page. This will be included in the next update to Connections due out soon.
Hope that helps.

ParticipantHi Steve,
Thanks for your prompt response. That makes sense. I think for now we can just use the drop down category search.
I have made a few changes mostly recommended by you and would like to understand how I make these changes so the changes are not lost in subsequent upgrades. Can you advise the best way to do this?

Any changes made to actual PHP/CSS/JS files will be lost in the event of an update. I looked back thru the topics you started and I see only one instance of me suggesting a file being edited and that would be the CSS to add the one label. You will only loose this change in the even you update the cMap template. The next version of Connections comes with a built in method to override core template files including the CSS file. The plus would be these overrides will be update safe. The negative is that if a new feature is implemented in an overridden file, one might not be able to take advantage of the new feature because it does not exist in the override file. Hope that makes sense and helps!
