ParticipantI’ve just purchased Excerpt Plus and created one test entry.

I love the look of the format, but when you click to go to the single page, I go back to the ugly default template again. How can I retain the attractive font and image formatting of the Excerpt Plus page on the single pages?

ParticipantUpdate: I realise I hadn’t set the templates properly
They are now ALL set to Excerpt Plus. Now when you go to the single page, all that shows is the same as the front page – none of the additional information.
I can see there is a “single.php” in the Excerpt Plus code, which includes all the extra info. Any idea what’s happening? Or have I set something incorrectly?

Ok, sounds like you have this resolved. Please let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks.

ParticipantNo, why do you think it’s resolved?
I’ve tried this two ways. I can set the main page to Excerpt Plus and the rest to a default profile. I don’t like that because the default profile is styled differently.
If I try setting all my templates to Excerpt Plus, then the single pages do not show any detail whatsoever – they just show the excerpt.
This is the front page:

Maybe I misunderstood…
Best I can tell the bio is shorter than the excerpt length so it only appears to be the same.
Create a much longer bio and you’ll see that only an excerpt is shown until you click the read more link.
By default, the template only shows the bio, nothing more. If you want more to be displayed, you need to configure the template via its shortcode options to turn on additional details. Here’s the lis of options you can turn back on:
enable_bio=TRUE enable_bio_head=FALSE enable_note=FALSE enable_note_head=FALSE show_title=FALSE show_org=FALSE show_contact_name=FALSE show_family=FALSE show_addresses=FALSE show_phone_numbers=FALSE show_email=FALSE show_im=FALSE show_social_media=FALSE show_dates=FALSE show_links=FALSEThe complete list of options and a summary on how to use them can be found here.
Hopefully I understood correctly and answered your question this time.

ParticipantOh I see. So you’re saying that by default, the Excerpt Plus plugin only ever shows the biography section and never, ever shows any of the other details?
It seems weird that anyone would ever find that useful.
One more question – if I customise the template, does that mean I have to customise it again every time the Connections plugin is updated?

ParticipantJust some feedback. I like the Connections plugin and it’s obvious you do a good job and have a lot of happy customers, but as a newbie I’m totally bewildered by all the different options. I struggled to work out which template, and it now looks as if I chose the wrong one. I’m now scared to try another one, or buy any of the add-ons, because I may make the wrong choice again and waste more money.
I think part of the problem is that some of the example sites are customised, not using the basic version of whatever plugin or extension, and that can lead people to misunderstand what each one does out of the box.

The options I showed you, you set them as part of the shortcode like the examples shows on the page I linked you to. You do not edit the template files.
Literally hundreds find Excerpt perfectly suited to their needs. Take this site for example. This is the original Except template, not the Plus. All they wanted was the bio excerpt and full bio. Not weird at all.
The great thing is, if you want to show more than just the bio, you just turn it on. Since you just typing some settings in the shortcode, it’s upgrade safe. I test Connections before every update with every template under a wide variety of options just to make sure templates doesn’t break. Now, if you edit a template, you will not lose it dugin a Connections update, but, if you update the template, you will lose any code changes.
What makes you feel you chose the wrong template? Do you like the way it looks? You just want more info to display, right? Use this shortcode on your page:
[connections show_title='TRUE' show_org='TRUE' show_contact_name='TRUE' show_addresses='TRUE' show_phone_numbers='TRUE' show_email='TRUE' show_im='TRUE' show_social_media='TRUE' show_dates='TRUE' show_links='TRUE']All the templates shown on the template product page are exactly as they are sold, nothing custom. Same for the template demo pages. On the template demo pages, the shortcodes used for the demo are given. Sites linked to on the template product page are too, out of the box. The only differences would the shortcode options they’ve used. I do this so everyone can see exactly what each template is like both in demo and on real sites so they can feel confident on what is being purchased. The Showcase page, yes, those are custom, but I do put that right in the description. Sorry that I somehow misguided you, but I do try to make sure everything is presented and nothing is hidden.

ParticipantOK it sounds like I just need to take a deep breath and stop panicking!
It’s good to know that updates of the main plugin won’t affect the templates.
Maybe I am wrong about the examples being misleading. Actually I like the fact that the enhancements of this plugin are offered separately, because so many plugins and themes get bloated because the developer lumps absolutely everything in together. However I do feel that you’ve got so many options, it gets quite dizzying going through them all and trying to work out which one to choose. A comparison table would be really helpful.

I agree … my hopes later this year I’ll be able to put together several tutorial videos and expand on the QuickTips on how to use the various pieces of Connections together.
