GuestFor a church web site I would like a family to be able to manage their entry. Can link be used for a whole family?
For instance, if I upload all family members with a single e-mail address and up load a family with that same e-mail address, and create an account with that e-mail address, can all of the family member info be updated and the individual records linked to the family record.

I’ve actually never tested Link, linking to a family entry … but I’m fairly certain it will not work because Link was designed to only allow creation of individual and organization entry types [an individual representing an organization]. A link will likely be created, but break upon being edited.
Adding the same email address to every family will definitely not work because Link creates a one to one relationship … one user account to one entry in Connections. It doe not create one to many relationships.
I’ve added this to my issue tracker to see if full support can be added, but at this time I can only suggest Link will not be the solution you are looking for at this time. My apologies.

GuestSteven,
Thanks for the reply. I appreciate you putting this on your issue tracker. We have about 2000 families in our parish, so figure 6000-8000 individuals. I definitely think that Connections is the best solution for an online directory. the two issues that I need to understand better are, how can I assign individuals to families in CSV upload, and how can I be efficient in uploading media. If I could use Link for families it would address both of these issues.
I don’t know if there is good documentation about csv upload or efficient uploading of media if so I would love to read it.
thanks
Chris

Unfortunately I think I’m a little short in being able to meet your needs…
The CSV Import does not create families on import.
There hasn’t been really much demand/requests so I haven’t spent the time to further that feature among tat various extensions.
With that many in your parish, it would take an incredible amount of time to do manually.
The only work around that I can think of is to import a single entry for each family in your parish as an individual using only the last name field for the family name. For example, “Smith, John and Jane”. It avoids having to enter every individual and then having to create the relationships. It would also then work with Link.
I’m not sure what you mean by efficient uploading of media … do you mean importing with the CSV file? Currently it does not do that either. It on my todo list. It will like be just another field that is the relative URL to the image or may just the image name to files that already have been uploaded via FTP.
The best documentation to the CSV Import is in the plugin itself. There are FAQs and the video walk-thru available on the site.
Don’t know if that helps at all, but I hope it does.

GuestSteven,
Definitely helps, two issues:
1) it looks like I cna use link to upload the families as individuals (thus address, phone e-mail,etc) and then change the type to family, input family name and relationships. it is good to have the high school kids who require service hours for school.
20 the question about efficient uploading of media was basically if I could just go into file manager and do a big upload of pictures and insert the media names into the connections database.
I think the long term solution is to use link ot upload the individuals, and volunteers to build out the families and upload media.
thanks again.
