Honestly, it is amazing that the results are mostly correct at all…

The entries were saved as the family entry type, the date field that is actually used for the sorting is not saved for the entry when it is a family or org type. So, the field that is being sorted is completely empty so what you are really seeing is unordered results that probably are just outputting in the order they were entered.

The fix would to be to go back and change them to the Individual entry type so the anniversary date is saved to that sort field. But that still would not get the results you want. What you would end up is is results starting from January going to December regardless of year/age.

Why? Well, way back when, Connections only had a birthday and anniversary date field and the input for those fields only required the day and month, no year. Why was that, well, Connections was born out of the need of my church to have an online directory, we didn’t need or want a year. To account for that, all dates were normalized to the year 1970 when saved to the db.

Fast forward… Connections now support years and multiple date types and does some rather gymnastic backward compatibility coding to support the and old. One area that has not received any love is the ordering by birthday/anniversary code. What should be done is that bit of code should be updated to use the new fields which saves the full date regardless of entry type.

It “should not” be too difficult to get this fixed in the upcoming 8.2.5 bugfix release. I would sure appreciate you help though. If I could get temp FTP access I’ll upload the fix after I complete it to make sure it functions as expected.

Yes, custom fields can be added programmatically. Nothing exists at this point to add them with a simple point and click interface.

You can see examples of extensions that add custom fields:

Each of the above, the source code is documented pretty well.

You can combine that with the details from this QuickTip to import into custom fields using the CSV Import extension.

Presently the easiest way to export data from Connections is using phpMyAdmin or similar tool.

Alternatively, you could try to using this script. The setup is quite complex since it is not a plugin.

By having the category='2' option in the shortcode, you will be limited the search results to just that category. The only ways to search within the other categories would to be first to switch to them using the drop down. If you want the search to be of the whole directory, you’ll have to remove that option.

Are there images with in the subfolders for each entry in ../wp-content/uploads/connection-images/? Do they show in the admin?

If you are copy/pasting make sure you only do it while on the Text tab of the post editor, never, on the Visual tab because that will also paste the underlying HTML from the page source from where you copied the text. This extra HTML will break the WordPress shortcode parser.

Switch the posted editor to the Text tab and remove any HTML that may have been pasted in and around the shortcode and its options. This isn’t a Connections limitation or bug, it is just how the post editor works.

Put another way, when on the Text tab, make sure the shortcode looks exactly like the one I gave your.

There’s the CSV Import extension which you can use to bulk import entries. What I very highly suggest is using LibreOffice to open your excel and then save the CSV file. LibreOffice does a far better job of correctly creating CSV files especially languages like Arabic which require UTF8 encoded files.

I see on your site you have 2.3.5.4 of Classifieds installed and the version I’ve testing is 2.3.6.4. Maybe this is a bug they have fixed. One difference I noticed. The older version loads is form validation script on the Connections admin pages and the new version does not. The Classifieds form validation script is preventing the add/edit entry form from submitting because it is failing the form validation for adding a classified post.

My first suggestion is, try updating Classified.

As explained in my reply in the other thread… you use add the shortcode only once. All the advanced shortcode options are adding to the one shortcode. That said the correct usage is:

[connections template='tile-plus' show_addresses=true list_type='family']

Oh, something that I have not said… the order of the options so not matter. Just in case you might have been thinking that is does.

Hope that further clarifies how to use these advanced options.
