Install

Introduction

There are several ways to install plugins in WordPress, below, are the supported methods for installing Connections.

Plugin Installer

Go to the WordPress admin and select “Add New” under the Plugins menu.

Type “Connections” in the search box and click “Search Plugins”.

Connections will show up at the top or near the top of the search results. Click the “Install  Now” link and then click the “Ok” button in the popup window.

When the plugin is finished installing, click the “Activate Plugin” link.

That’s it, Connections has been installed. Now, go add some entries.

Once you have entries added, create a page to show them on.

Ok, I’ve done that, now what? You need to add the Connections shortcode to the page and save it.

Manual Upload

Download Connections from the WordPress Extend Plugin Repository: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/connections/

Go to the WordPress admin and select “Add New” under the Plugins menu.

Select the “Upload” link.

Click “Choose File” and select the plugin zip file that you downloaded from WordPress Extend.

Click the “Install Now” button.

When the plugin is finished installing, click the “Activate Plugin” link.

That’s it, Connections has been installed. Now, go add some entries.

Once you have entries added, create a page to show them on.

Ok, I’ve done that, now what? You need to add the Connections shortcode to the page and save it.

    Sorry, I realize these are basic questions, but I simply don’t “know” how to do these things and would very much appreciate a touch of guidance so I can see if this widget will be an advantage to us.

      In the WP admin there is a new menu group below the Settings admin menu labeled as “Connections”. In this menu there is a menu item named “Add Entry”; click that. You can add new entries using this form.

    I have tried installing the plugin both ways, but I am getting permissions errors. Four or five like this:

    ERROR: Path ../wp-content/connection_images does not seem to exist. Please try deactivating and reactivating Connections.

    So I’ve done that, plus I went back and set all my permissions for the entire folder (even though that looks like a folder that doesn’t exist?) to 777 but it still won’t let me activate it normally. Weird!

    Update: I went in and created those directories (just empty directories) that it was asking for — connection_images and connections_templates and now it’s working fine…

      Interesting, those directories should be created during the plugin activation. Also I suggest permissions be set at 755, or 767 if the server setup requires.

      I’m in the planning stages of developing the front end user entry form add-on. I hope to have something, probably fairly basic, by the end of the quarter.

      Ratings are on my todo list, but that is pretty far out at this point.

        Steven, I just want to say I am in big support of allowing site visitors to add and modify their OWN entries. Hopefully you will allow the plugin to work with S2Member. The way we use it, currently, the members have to send us their info I post it (when I have time) and same for all changes.

        I would like for ONLY our paid members to update it via a page controlled for Members Only via S2Member.

    Cool plugin. I have a large number of employees, and having their full bios on the connections page would be cumbersome. Is there a way to show the entries in a simple list like:

    John Smith
    Karen Smith
    Mary Smith
    …

    And then when you click on the name, it takes you to a single bio page? Is there a way to view a single bio page for an entry? Thanks!

      Well, yes and no. Out of the box plugin and play, not yet. But it can be done using the Connections theme template tag and a small edit to the template.

    I’ve managed to edit a template and create a line-item list of entries. Then I use jquery to fade in the full entry.

    Is there any way to view a single entry without having to hard code it in the WordPress page? Something that gives me a single bio on a single page? Thanks.

    If you can alter the template so the entry name is a link that passes the entry ID via a query string you can use then pull the entry ID from the query string and then pass that to the Connections theme template tag.

    connectionsEntryList($atts)

    The $atts variable is an associative array that accepts all the shortcode attributes. So you could do something like this.

    connectionsEntryList( array( 'id' => $_GET['id'] ) )

      Thanks for this. But I’d rather not have the individual pages with an ugly url like this:

      http://www.example.com/?id=3125

      Instead I would like to access the entries like so:

      http://example.com/directory/name/john-smith/

      and

      http://example.com/directory/name/mary-jane/

      Is there any way to do this, maybe with rewrite rules? Thanks.

          I am thinking about buying your pro version and theme but need something answered before I do.

          I need to create this url structure for each member. http://example.com/directory/name/john-smith/

          I noticed that one of your clients was website was able to have a unique url for each member in their directory. Do you know how they were able to accomplish this? I tried contacting them but no answer back yet. I really need to make this happen as its important for SEO purposes. Please be descriptive as I am not a strong programmer.

            OK, i have no problem creating a unique page for each person but will i be able to use your FORM addon to have people submit their changes and then it will automically update their unique page once I approve their form?

            Sorry, not yet because there is no method to link a submitter to a specific entry. I am working on a separate add on named ‘Link’ to link a WP user to a Connections entry to allow this type functionality.

    For the life of me I cannot seem to find out why my images are not loading, all of the files are in the proper places with the proper permissions. If anyone could take a look the help would be greatly appreciated, I have never used this plugin before… I do not know if it a setting that I have misappropriated or if it is a coding issue, the site uses fancybox for wp. the location is here: http://harrisonlandscape.net/wp/staff/

      Looking at the JavaScript console it seems that Fancybox is throwing a couple errors which is preventing the Connections JavaScript from running.

      Connections does not integrate with the WP search since entries are not ‘posts’ like other directory solutions. The new cMap and Market templates have integrated searches.

      Please login to the site via FTP and manually delete the connections folder within the plugins folder. You should now be able to re-install Connections normally.

    I have installed Connections and added all of my entries; however, I am not able to upload photos and I do not know how to get connections on the correct page. Is there an html code I need to enter in order to get the plugin on the page? I’ve never done a website before, so this might be a simple question, but I don’t know how to get the plugin on the actual page.

      You need to create a page to show the directory on and add the Connections shortcode to that page. I’ve amended the installation instructions to include those steps. I’ve also added link to the instructions for the shortcode.

      When adding entries, set them to private, then only when users are logged in they will be able to see them.

          Question. Are you expecting an entry in Connections to be tied to a single user account so the user can maintain their own data? If, so, Connections does not yet support that.

    I built a site using Connections on a testing server. I want to move over to the live site. Is there a way to export entries from the testing server and import them into the live site? I did a wordpress export and import and that didn’t work.

      Sorry, I missed you comment which is the reason for my delay in my reply. The only way to transfer from one site to another would to export the Connections tables from the testing server as a sql file and then import that sql file into your production server.

    I see lots of support for the front-end entry/mod and export feature… glad you have these under consideration.

    Stupid question, if I may. Can you outline how best to put modified code (cmap .css, functions.php, connections/css/cn-user, etc…) somewhere where plugin/template updates don’t always necessitate recreation from my side.

    I know there’s likely a real easy way I should already know. :)

      Yes, I’m working on the front end entry form right now and another yet to be announced add-on. Both of which I can not get finished soon enough.

      Lets see. All custom/premium template should be installed by default to: ../wp-content/connections_templates. This folder sits outside of the plugin folder so it does not get deleted during a Connections upgrade.

      The best place to put CSS is in the theme’s custom CSS area if it has one. Most premium themes do now-a-days.

    Directly after successful install via Plugins > Add New > Search, my Admin Dashboard experiences an HTTP 500 error. The website itself still works as usual, but I lose access to the Admin Dashboard from any browser. My only remedy for the solution thus far has been to manually delete the Connections plugin directory via FTP. Perhaps a permissions issue? I have a personal blog that has no trouble activating Connections. Any assistance is greatly appreciated, thanks.

    I’m getting a permission error in the admin section…

    ERROR: Path ../wp-content/plugins/connections/cache does not seem to be writeable.

    Everything seems to be working so this is pretty low priority, but would rather not look at a glaring error message if it’s a simple permissions change.

    Cache permissions are set to 755, is this correct? Might be this is a page.ly (hosting provider) issue as they seem to really lock things down; this is my first experience with them.

      755 usually does it for many hosts, but the issue becomes user groups. Some providers run PHP as one user group and FTP in another user group. This requires more open folder permission. Can you try 767?

    I have loaded all my categories and I have started to add entries, but when I select categories for the entries, they do not attach to the entry. Nothing does. Not even Uncategorized..unless I deselect all the categories then it defaults to that.

    i have just installed this plugin successfully and really try my best way to buy this pro module (csv import) then suddenly stuck on this silly question : How can I show the entry to my page/post at the front end?
    i have tried finding the clue to your documentation page, but i couldn’t find it at all.

      That error is coming from the WP plugin updater/installer, Connections has nothing to do with that other than being the part if its process. Can you install and update other plugins?

      Please make sure to have all the filters at the top of the manage page set to all and also click the “All” link right below the logo. This will allow Connections to show every entry. My guess is that you have a filter set that returns no results.

      Nearly everyday I add more to the docs sections, it is up, make sure you use the sidebar nav to view the various docs. I also hired a freelancer to write up a quick start guide. I have contracted them awhile ago but unfortunately I still have not received an initial draft. When they’re finished I will be posting it immediately.

    I can’t find the style sheet for Connections. I am trying to hide the notes header on Slim.

    Also, I am using it for a client organization list. Can I have it show sub-level list that is hidden until higher level is opened. See below where Program 1 & 2 would be hidden until I open Office 1

      You can use the built in method to hide the notes header. Take a look at the Slim template product page under the ‘Customization Options’ tab for instructions.

    After I installed the plugin I get “You are not allowed to edit this page.” message. I can’t access WP Admin. The only thing helping is manually deleting the Connections plugin directory via FTP.

        Thanks, I received the help desk ticket with the info. The really odd this is is is a standard WP function causing the issue, get_currentuserinfo(). There was technically nothing wrong with the code but I made a change that should resolve the issue. I’m going to incorporate this into the next release so this shouldn’t happen again.

    Searching for Community/Directory/Forums plugin I found Connections, I think it’s a great plugin but it needs some other functionality like addding Username and Password, languages and friendly urls to the Profiles… and more documentation to develop plugins for special actions…

    By the way, with a little bit of work I did all the changes to support friendly urls to the profiles also added an username and password to the profiles -for future integrations with other wordpress plugins-, if anyone is interesting contact me.

      Documentation can always be better, I agree, and is something I work continuously to improve. Seeing that you’re upset there must be something specific you’re looking for. If you let me know I might be able to assist and take corrective action. In the meantime, here are the answers to the other questions:

      I do not put up direct contact info on purpose but I am still very easy to contact and normally readily available. You only need to use the Help Desk ticket form found here, http://connections-pro.com/help-desk/ or drop a comment like you’ve done.

      You say it doesn’t work. How doesn’t what work?

      What are you buying? You don’t need to buy anything if you do not want to. Connections itself is free. What is available to buy? Connections comes with several starter templates and the templates available for sale here offer additional layouts and features unique to the template. You would choose one based on what your needs are and which one comes closest to fulfilling those needs. And if none do, there is no need to purchase one. Other items available for sale are the Pro add-on plugins. Those, basically, extend the base feature set of Connections, like bulk importing using a CSV file, front-end user entry submissions and encrypting email addresses to help prevent email harvesting bots from seeing them. Each of these are separate and not needed for Connection to operate. You would only buy one if it fulfilled a need.

      Why am I charging money? Quite simply if there was no money there would be no Connections.

      Maybe Connections does not suit your needs? There are several other excellent directory plugins out there each with their own pro and cons. Maybe try the others and you’ll find a better fit which meets your expectations.

        I asked a question and you answered it within a couple of hours. For a free plugin I consider that fast service. And after seeing your answer I could have probably done a bit more research and found the answer myself. I’m sure the plugin isn’t perfect (can always find an issue with just about any plugin), the set up and creation with your plugin was simple and fast. Count me as an individual that’s heading over to give a positive review.

    Hmmm… finally got directory working and looking as I wanted! Yay!

    However, it was in a development folder. Now I am ready for my site to go live.

    I followed the directions on WordPress’ site for moving a WP installation. It worked, and my site looks good… EXCEPT my Business Directory which broke!

    :(

    Can you point me in the right direction for getting it fixed?

      On the Connections : Templates admin page activate any random template and the reactivate your desired template. Depending on the shortcode use, you may have to do this for each of the template types. Hopefully that resolves the issue.

      This seems to be a conflict with the theme. The theme is using a jQuery Plugin called Uniform. The theme is setting up Uniform to style all form elements which can negatively impact plugins. cMap uses a similar jQuery Plugin called Chosen which is configured to only affect the drop down for cMap. I can provide direction on how to disable this for cMap, but I would suggest that, if the theme has the option, to disable Uniform.

    Sorry if this isn’t the correct place for this query, but I wasn’t sure where it might fit.
    Other than categories, is there a way of ‘associating’ connections – a sort of ‘related posts’ equivalent so that a few entries may be ‘tied together’ in a level below categories, and without the need to create categories.
    Maybe my application would help…
    I have a church group website. It lists all the churches and pastors in a large geographical area, with smaller sub-divisions of that area set as categories. But one pastor may be associated with several churches in a sub-division (category), so in their connection entry I’d like to be able to set ‘related connections’ and tie those to the church entries (and vice versa) so that ‘loose links’ can be made between connections.
    I hope this makes sense.

          The other images are used for other purposes. The larger one is used for the Profile template and shown when editing an entry. You however, can call any of the three images by setting a value for the getImage() method in the template.php file. You can find the documentation for this method in the class.output.php.

    I have purchased the Excerpts template. The team photos are not showing up. Only the progress wheel is showing constantly. I have resized the photos to your suggestions (100 x 120). The page is at: http://173.254.78.28/~mynewera/our-team/

    What do I need to do differently?

      The issue is because TimThumb, the script that does the dynamic resizing can not find the source image. I believe this has to do that the way the site is setup because it is not yet live.

        It can find the images if I use one of the included templates instead of the Excerpt template. Do I need to put the connection_images and/or the connection_templates file folder somewhere else? It’s currently under /wp-content/connection_images.

          Right, the default templates do not resize images on the fly, Excerpt does, to ensure the layout does not break if the user does not set the image size appropriately before hand. There is nothing to move for you to move. TimThumb can not find the images due to the server configuration. I believe once the site is taken live the issue will resolve itself. If it does not, a configuration option for TimThumb, for the DOCROOT might have to be set.

    I just added your plugin and incidentally have been searching for 1 hour for this!
    Where do you set your home page of the directory. I see the error message and I see the word Page below the General Settings but there is no box to input the page.

    Please be specific in telling me what and where to do this.

    I could not find a page to support this as well. Do you have one under your installation page?

      This setting can be found on the Connections : Settings admin page under the General. Choose the page where your directory is located. This should be the page where you used the [connections] shortcode.

    For some reason, Connections will not allow me to add another entry. I am at 10. Is there a governor or restrictor somewhere I’m not seeing?

      No there is no limit to the number of entries. Is there an error that occurs or something? Do you have all the filters on the Manage page to show all?

    After I made my website ready, I moved it to the main directory.

    It was like example.com/newWebsite

    and I moved all the files to the first directory in order to make the website live. I made it correctly. everything works good except the connections. It shows all the entries now despite what categories I created. It used to work good before. Now I got that the plugin still reads from the old root however I transferred everything to the main root. Why its like that?

      Sorry, but it is difficult to understand what the issue is? I this question related to a template where you can choose categories, for example cMap? If this is a template question… since you moved your site, please activate any random template and then reactivate your desired template. If this is a template question … Which version of Connections do you have installed? And, can you share a link so I can see what the issue is that you are having?

    Is there a possibility to make new entry options default choices? Like as in instead of “individual” make the default choice “organization” instead? Is there also a default choice to “enable” or otherwise default choice be “public” for all new entries instead of having to select these choices each time? Just purchased the cmap template. Like it, but adding all these entries I need to add and having to keep changing the default choices is beginning to be a real pain. Is there an option somewhere I am missing to make this possible? If not can you easily change the options default choice somewhere or can you come out with a new update to allow this?

      Hmmm, that is not a Connections error. Are you able to install other plugins? It seems the plugins folder might not be writable. make sure the plugins folder has the correct folder permissions and if there is a connections folder, try deleting it and re-installing it. Hope that helps!

    I am having a similar issue while installing just sits on unpacking the package. Have installed other plugins fine. Can I unpack manually and ad the contents to a connections folder inside plugins?

      Sound like the zip file got corrupted while downloading. have you tried downloading it again from your Purchase History page?

    Hello, I would like to update to the new version (version 0.7.6).
    I bought the pro pack on 2/24/13 and have not installed it yet. Now that I can install cMap as a plugin I would like to move forward with the install. When I log in and go to http://connections-pro.com/my-account/purchase-history/ the system tells me that I need to be logged in to access the downloads in my Purchase History BUT I’m already logged in. Why can’t I see my purchase history when I’m logged in? The system asks me to log in again but I am already logged in. What do I need to do to access the update if I can’t do it via my purchase history?

      After you log in, hit CONTROL + F5 on the purchase history page. The browsers cached the page in the not logged in state. Hitting those keys will force the browser to re-fetch the page.

    As an aside I initially tried to activate the Market plugin but it failed saying that Connections was needed (might want to add that to the instructions for installing these themes as plugins cuz I didn’t realize it needed to be activated first). I deactivated and deleted the Market theme (no sign of it in the plugins folder) and then searched and downloaded the Connections package and tried to activate it….that’s when I got the error above. I did try deleting the Connections folder in plugins and tried again…. same error

    Love the plugin. Is there anyway to just publish a 1 line listing of all entries? One line for each entry…without all the additional data? I have a directory page that lists everything, but I would like just a simple data list on a second page.

    THanks Steven, I tried installing that template with the provided shortcode ([connections template="names"]), but it’s not linking the items to their correct listings. It’s just linking to a page with the name on it. I need a list that will take the user to their actual listing page.

      Remove the template=”names” from the shortcode. Now goto the Connections : Templates admin page and activate the Names template under the All template type. After you do that go to the Individual template type and active the desired template. Do the same for the Organization template type. Lastly, go to the Connections : Settings admin page and under the Display tab, check the Single Entry option and update the settings. That should get you what you’re looking for.
