Interested in translating Connections? Great! Here is a quick introduction and how you can get started…

Transifex is used to create and manage translations for Connections, its templates and extensions. Transifex was chosen because it provides an easy to use centralized platform to manage translations for us. Even better though, it provides you, the translators, an easy to use for creating and maintaining your translations for Connections. You’ll be guaranteed that you latest translation will be included in every update which will benefit your entire community.

To get started with Transifex:

  1. Go here and create a free account.
  2. After you create a free account, send me your username and which language you will be translating Connections. Alternatively, you can request to create a translation from right within Transifex on the Connections Project page.
  3. Lastly, I will add you as the coordinating translator for the language.

After you have been added as the coordinating translator these are the basic steps for translating:

  1. Login.
  2. Go to to this page.
  3. Click the link of the language you wish to translate.
  4. Click the POT File link. This will bring up a pop-up window.
  5. Click the Translate now button.
  6. You will now be in the translation editing screen.
  7. On the left is every string in Connections that can be translated.
  8. Click on the strings you want to translate.
  9. Enter your translation where it says, “Type your translation here”.
  10. At any point you can stop and any strings you have translated will be saved.
  11. Click the Dashboard link at the top right to go back to the main project page.

I will be notified when as updates occur. I will then pull down the translation and include it in the next update.

FAQs

I’ve added or updated a translation, do I have to wait for an update?

The short answer is, no. The long answer; you do not have to wait for an update to start using the translation you added or updated. To start using your translation immediately:

  1. Download and install Poedit.
    • After you install Poedit you need to make a settings change which only needs to be done once.
    • You need to setup Poedit to always compile the MO file when saving.
    • Do do this, click the File → Preferences and on the Editor tab check the Automatically compile .mo file on save box.
  2. Go to the Connections Project page in Transifiex.
  3. Click the language you just added or updated.
  4. Click the POT File link. This will open up a pop-up window.
  5. Click the Download for use link. This will open up a window where you can choose where to save your translation. I suggest saving it to your Desktop so it is easy to find.
  6. Open the file you downloaded in Poedit.
  7. After you open the PO file, you only need to click the Save button.
  8. Go to where you saved the PO file you originally downloaded, you should now see a MO file.
  9. The MO and PO files needs to be named exactly using this format: connections-lang_COUNTRY.mo and connections-lang_COUNTRY.po. Here are few examples:
    • Spanish connections-es_ES.mo and connections-es_ES.po
    • French connections-fr_FR.mo and connections-fr_FR.po
    • German connections-de_DE.mo and connections-de_DE.po
  10. Lastly, upload both the MO and PO file to your WordPress installation languages folder. This folder should be in the wp-content folder. If it does not exist, create it. For more details, please see this FAQ.

Where are the PO files?

The PO files are no longer included with Connections, only the required MO files are included. Transifex is used to manage translations as it provides an easy to use centralized platform to manage translations as well as providing translators with an easy to use interface for creating and updating translations. Where should I save my MO and PO files?

Translations for Connections should be saved in the following folder in your WordPress installation:

../wp-content/languages/connections/

If you do not have a languages folder in the wp-content folder; first create it and then create the connections folder within it.

NOTE: Spelling and capitalization are very important. If your translation is not being loaded, please double check the folder names.

NOTE: In order for the translation to be loaded the WPLANG constant must be set to the correct local in the wp-config.php file.

How can I update a translation?

The steps to updating a translation is very similar to creating a new translation.

  1. Go here and create a free account.
  2. After you create a free account, send me your username and which language you wish to update. Alternatively, you can request to join a translation team from right within Transifex on the Connections Project page by clicking the language you wish to update and then click the Join Team button.
  3. If you send me your username, I will add you to the translation team for the language.

  5. Click the Translate now button.
