Yes, using the Say? What plugin is what you want to do. Here’s a link to the documentation for the cMap template which explains how to change its specific strings and well as links to the tutorial which explains how to use Say What to change the “core” Connections strings.

It is a fix applied to the Gridder template. No other plugin updates would affect it. Neither would updating WordPress. I’ll be releasing a formal Gridder update today which contains that update. So from that perspective, yes, the fix is permanent.

RE: On my site, the Connections is on a separate webpage. When I go into Customize from the Connections Templates Admin page the preview I see is not of the directory but instead it is a page that shows a random image my media gallery.

Please navigate to the Connections Settings admin page and choose your Members page as the directory home page. I suspect that this is either not set or set to a different page than the one the directory exists.
