ParticipantSteven –
I’m delighted to see your detailed answer on this question, however I’m unclear exactly where to place these code snippets. Right now, I’m editing manage.php (in plugins/connections-link/submenus) as you instructed earlier, starting on line 25.
Where exactly do these code snippets get added?
Also, when will Link 2.0 and Form 2.0 be released? I’d love to beta test them, it would simplify things a lot.
Here is my current process that I’ve set up:
1) Visitor comes to standard WordPress page on the site with a signup form created by Digital Access Pass [DAP] (a robust membership plugin), and enters their first and last name and email address, then hits the Submit button.
2) DAP then does a bunch of work:
a) it adds them as a WP user, creating a secure password for them
b) it adds them to its own member list (which is maintained using other tables inside the WP database)
c) it logs them in to the site (both WP and DAP) with their new account
d) it redirects them to a Member Home Page which can display information on their account
e) it sends them an email with their login name and password, so they can log back into the site later
f) it connects to my Infusionsoft CRM account through its API and adds them as a contact into Infusionsoft and tags them as a member of this website directory list. If they are already in my system, then it simply tags their record. Infusionsoft can then start a campaign or a series of actions or add them to an autoresponder email sequence.3) The Member Home Page has a link offering people the opportunity to Add a Directory Entry. This is programmed to take them to
http://www.archicaduser.com/wp-admin/users.php?page=connections_link4) In the manage.php script, I am able to pull the email from DAP for the currently logged in user, then query Infusionsoft for other data such as their first and last name, which I will use to prepopulate the directory form fields.
5) Once I’ve got the prepopulation working, I intend to email my list from Infusionsoft, encouraging them to sign up for the User Directory. I’ll provide a customized link in the email that will send them to a signup page on the website with a coded URL containing their contact info as arguments. These arguments will be used to prepopulate the DAP signup form.
After they submit the form, DAP will do all the work listed in step 2 above. They’ll go to the Member Home Page, then to the Add My Directory entry page. The PHP code will pull their contact info from DAP and Infusionsoft to prepopulate the Directory form with their address as well as email and name.
6) This process may be scripted to automatically flow through and do the DAP signup submit action for them, since they are coming to the page after clicking a link saying “Click here to add yourself to the ArchiCAD User Directory”.
I want to make this as easy as possible – simply click the link, and get added to the site member list and have the form partially filled out, ready for a quick review and for people to add more info as they wish.
I hope this is clear enough so that you understand what I’m trying to do. I’ve got most of the mechanics working, except for the pre-population of the Directory form. Once you explain where these code snippets go, I’ll be able to finish this up.
By the way, I love the idea that you would provide a hook for customizing the Directory form so that developers can add Instructions for their site members to refer to while filling in the form. It would be awesome if this could go beyond simple text, and allow HTML code, because then one could even insert a video to greet the visitor and give them motivation and instructions.

ParticipantHi Steven –
I’m returning to this little project again, and have made a bit of progress.
I was able to edit the manage.php file and successfully echo text near the top of the page so now I’ll be able to put in custom directions for the user to refer to as they fill in the form.
I would like to auto-fill in some of the form fields to make this even easier. I have access in PHP to the contact’s name and email address, and possibly their city and country, and would like to put these in to the form fields for them.
In the manage.php I don’t see where these fields are created for the form. It looks like perhaps this is handled in another PHP file related to meta_boxes. Can you point me in the right direction so I can look at whatever files are creating the form code?
If for some reason it is not going to be possible to use PHP for this, my fall-back will be to use jQuery and fill in the fields using Javascript after the page loads. However, I’d prefer to use PHP if possible.

ParticipantHi Steven –
I fully understand how you have to prioritize your to-do list, so no problem there. I hope you get to it before too long…
While I can hack away at basic PHP, it would take too much effort and concentration and trial and error for me to modify the function query and add the shortcode. I do appreciate that you pointed me (or anyone else reading this thread) exactly where to look!
No need to respond to this – I’m all set for now. Thanks again for your friendly and expert advice and prompt responses!

ParticipantThanks Steven.
We have worked around the issue by placing many separate shortcodes on one page. Each shortcode is set to show directory entries from one country, and we have text headings above each one with the name of the country. This will work OK for my client, he’s happy with it.
Sorting and grouping with headings would be a good feature enhancement to consider implementing. This is a common method to organize larger directories, whether by department, interest group, or location, or even a combination. Perhaps you could make this a premium add-on feature – people who have large organizations could justify spending more to get this extra option, while those with smaller organizations (and less money) don’t need it. I’d buy it myself for my other directory website, the ArchiCAD User Group, an international directory of architects who use ArchiCAD software.

ParticipantSteven –
You are totally awesome – both of these changes worked like a charm.
I just posted an enthusiastic review for you.
I would give you more than 5 stars if I could!

ParticipantHi Steven –
This is awesome, thanks!
Two follow-up questions:
1) It turns out that some people are both Provider and Researcher. How would the code need to be changed to list them both with a comma in between:
John Hamel LCSW (San Rafael, USA) Provider, Researcher
[I have already figured out how to put in the parentheses around the address for clarity, by replacing the empty quotes ‘ ‘ separator with the appropriate separators ‘ (‘ or ‘) ‘.]
2) If someone puts in one or more addresses but DOESN’T check the Preferred box, your tweaked function call looks like it would not show any address. Is there a way to still show an address (it could be the first or the last one)?
I will post a glowing review later today, for sure!

ParticipantSteven –
That worked great!
Initially all the info was broken up into separate lines, but I used CSS to get all my info displayed inline rather than block.
There’s are two remaining problems, which you’ll see if you visit the site:
http://www.battererintervention.org/membership/To explain:
1) All entries use a category to specify their world region (e.g. North America, Europe, Australia, etc.) in addition to the categories mentioned above of Researcher and/or Provider. This category info will allow searching for people in Europe, for example, rather than only being able to search by country.
Is there a way I can eliminate listing the region categories in the slim listing, while still showing the Researcher / Provider info?
2) Some people may have more than one location specified.
Is there a way to only show one location?
To show you why this matters, here is what we’re seeing for one of the listings that has two locations; it also illustrates the unnecessary listing of the world region category:
John Hamel LCSW San Rafael, USA Walnut Creek, USA North America, Provider
You can see that it’s showing San Rafael as well as Walnut Creek (two cities) plus it says North America in addition to the USA country info.
I can live with showing the two locations, perhaps, but would really prefer not to display the North America or Europe category info since in this context we are showing the country.
Thanks again for your help!!

ParticipantOne more thing that I just noticed. When I bring up the Membership page, all 4 of the current members show up. When I use the Category popup and choose Researcher, only 2 of the 3 show up (as mentioned above); then when I use the Category popup and choose All Categories, only 3 of the 4 show up – leaving out that same record for Kenneth Corvo.
So this directory entry shows up using the basic shortcode to display the directory, but not when the Category search is used – whether for a particular category (e.g. Researcher) or for All Categories.
I hope you can give me an idea of what to do – or help me to troubleshoot it.

ParticipantHi Steven –
Thanks for your prompt and thoughtful feedback.
I’d like people to be able to submit and maintain their entry from the front end, although doing it in the admin area would be acceptable. We need to create a new WP user for each member since (after I get this going) I want to require login in order to see the directory of members.
My site may potentially grow to have thousands of members in the free member directory. At this point, I’m not sure how this will all work. It has to be automated, so people can submit their information and get listed as a member (I don’t need to review their submission), and ideally be able to edit or add to their profile page.
I want to make it easy for site visitors, and a minimum of work for me.
I will try finding and setting up the system with a user registration plugin. If I set the Roles properly will this allow new users to create and edit their directory listing?
Another related question: is there a way for the biography or notes sections to allow images or media? It seems that the field editor only allows basic rich text formatting.
