I can not seem to be able to replicate this…

Sometimes other plugins can mess up the roles and capabilities Connections adds (they’ll mess up the custom roles and capabilities of other plugins too).

Try resetting all the role capabilities and then reset the options.

Now, as for allowing a user to edit their own entry … you need Link and (optionally) Form.
