The possible cause is it might be likely that the resources allocated to PHP are close to their limits. And, it just happens that deactivating Connections keeps you below those limits. PLease try the following:

Also, check with your web host and ask which version of PHP is running. WordPress recommends PHP 7.1 because it it much faster and far more resource efficient which makes your site run faster.
