I think you might have misunderstood my answer… Many of the templates include a user searchable category drop drop such as cMap rather than a list of categories. A list of categories simply takes up too much space, especially if you have a lot of them, which many users do. By putting in a searchable drop down that brings the actual important content closer to the top of the page, the entries.
If you prefer a list of categories, the Market template outputs a list beside the entries, take a look the demo.
Alternatively, the Widget Pack includes a widget that can be placed in the theme’s sidebar. This outputs a list as well and by being in the sidebar, the list can be quickly available to the user site wide.
These design choices were made to ensure the important content is front and center by being as close to the top of the page as possible while requiring one less click for the user.
