micro, format, what, huh? What is it? Do I care and if I should what does it mean for me?
Let me explain…
For the longest time, several years in fact, Connections output the entries marked up according to the hCard microformat spec. The nitty gritty details can be found here at http://microformats.org/wiki/hcard. But to summarize, marking up the code that displays the entries according to the hCard spec makes it very easy for computers to read and properly interpret. What this means to you is the search engines such as Bing and Google know exactly what the details are for each entry in your directory. So, this gives your Connections directory pages a bit, of what is called, SEO.
Now for the QuickTip…
These microformats can also be read by extensions in web browsers. For Firefox there is Operator and for Chrome there is Microformats for Google Chrome. Sorry IE users, there does not seem to be an addon available for you. These extensions are not perfect but quite functional. Personally, I prefer the Chrome extension. Install them today, give them a try and spread the word to your users!
