It seems unlikely Connections would be the cause because it does not do anything during a post/page save. Well, there is one small this it does, it check for the [connections] shortcode and cleans up common errors. But that only occurs when the shortcode is on the page.

Perhaps there is somehow a conflict with another plugin where this manifests only when both are active during a save. Have you tried deactivating other plugins while Connections is activate?
