The fact that both the theme’s login and the Connections Login extension both function the same way indicates this not an issue with Connections.
I suspect, that after account creation, the user is not automatically logged in. This accounts for the first required login.
In regards to being redirected to the WP login screen after “logging” in the the first time. The sounds like a configuration issue with something on your site. Best guess is that it is set to actually redirect to the login screen even though the user is already likely logged in.
These are just guesses and the best advice I can give is to scour the other plugin and theme settings to see if you can find a setting related to login redirects.
RE: when I click “view my entry” it goes to a 404 page.
Please deactivate and delete Connections. Now reinstall. Your data and settings will not be lost. This will simply pull the latest files from wp.org. I suspect that will address this issue.
