The problem seems to be a plugin conflict with RSVPMaker version 4.7.2. When I deactivated RSVPMaker, the Connections backend started working again. So I dropped back to RSVPMaker version 4.7.1, and that appears to be compatible.

So I have Connections 8.6.9 and RSVPMaker 4.7.1 working. I will post on the RSVPMaker forum about this problem, also.
