This is not being done by Connections. It is being added by a javascript file included with the theme. Temporarily disable javascript in your browser. You’ll notice the links are fine. Now re-enable javascript.
The file in the theme causing this is named directory_script.js and can be found here:
http://www.nsseo.org/wp-content/themes/Sterling/directory_script.js
It seems this script specifically targets Connections and its links. Its kind of neat to see a theme target Connections but it is confusing why they would append -directory to the character index links.
You’ll have to remove this file to keep the theme from loading it. You should also contact the theme’s dev because this seems to be a bug to me in their theme.
