Apologies in the delay to my reply!

Connections has no built in way to take payments and such. Other users have used membership plugins such as Restrict Content Pro to handle user registration and taking payments. They used Link to allow there members to add a entry to the directory.

The entries you were able to view as a guest, did you have the entry set as private? Did you update the settings to require login? Are you using a page cache plugin such as W3TC?
