Apologies for the delay in my reply! I initially overlooked it yesterday when I was doing my support forum work.

What you wish to do is possible but will require two pages. Create a second page, blank, no content but the [connections] shortcode. Set this new page as the directory home page. On you existing directory page, add the force_home shortcode option.
