Try adding str_select_all='' to the existing shortcode on the page. You should only have a single instance of the that looks like this:

[connections category=12 card_width=280 card_height=200 repeat_alphaindex='TRUE' show_social_media='TRUE' str_select_all='']

I think that will “hide” the default option. Honestly, I can not remember off the top of my head.
