Clicking the Manage admin link is the side admin menu is the only way presently. When I rewrite the admin page manage page. I’ll be adding a “clear” button. Similar to how there is a “Clear” search button when doing a search on the site frontend.

Correct, this allow you to search within the selected character. This is by design.
