Lose the CSS when you update? That really depends on where you added the custom CSS. If you added to the Connections CSS files, then yes. If you added it to the theme’s styles.css file, maybe, when you update the theme. If the theme has an area to add custom CSS, then, very likely no.

You could edit the template you are using to add the notes fields, but you would lose that edit when you update so you would have to reapply the update each time there is an update. Now, with that said … the next release has had the core templates updated in a way that if you move it to the /plugins/ folder and make the change, you will not lose any edit when there is a plugin update.
