Thanks for this!  I’d assumed that because it shows up in the “plugins” category, it would function directly as a plugin.  But is there any way to insert the Search widget into just one page?  Especially Search by Category – I really don’t want the whole list of categories on my main page sidebar, but I need it available in my Directory subpage.
