What they did there was clever and in some ways beat me to it…

What they did was used the links that was created by the category widget and created to custom menu nav widgets. The quick instructions…

Go to the Appearance : Menus admin page and create a new menu. Make sure you do NOT assign it a theme location.

After creating the new menu. Add Links to it. copy past the links from the category widget to make that easy. Save the menu.

Now go to the Appearance : Widgets admin page and drag the Custom Menu widget to your sidebar. Select your custom menu you just created and save.

Rinse, wash, repeat.
