Since Connections is free and comes with several core templates you might want to install it and give it a spin to see if it suits your needs. The premium templates do extend the feature set a bit with pagination, category filtering and search but primarily they simply format and/or display the data you’ve entered into Connections differently. Think of template for Connections like themes for WordPress.
