Which version were you running prior to the update?
sounds like WordPress failed to update the plugin. It’s very rare, but does happen. If that happens again, no matter the plugin, just delete the failed update from the plugins folder using FTP. The will get you back in a running state without having to resort to whole site restores.
If your do not have permissions to do db updates, a user that does will have to login. You really should change the db to permit alter table for your WordPress install… WordPress will have a few small db schema changes coming that will require changes.
