Just FYI, this happened to me too. All my Connections extensions are still there, but it deleted the overall plugin (not the folder though).

I followed your instructions and it worked. But I do think this may have been an issue with the last WordPress update.

I have Connections on 2 websites and I only had this issue with one of them (they are both using the same host).
