This is a web host issue. Both WP and Connections require at least the GD Image Library to be installed to process images. WP hides this requirement by using CSS scaling. But this can really slow down you site because the images are not being optimized by WP before being used. Connections does not hide this requirement like WP.

To solve this, contact your web host and ask them to install the GD Image Library. This is nearly universally installed by default by all web hosts. Generally this only ever pops up after an web host upgrade where they forget to ensure the library is loaded for their users.
